Volleyball Sweeps Dartmouth To Stay Unbeaten In Ivy Play

9/29/2018 7:15:00 PM

Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red volleyball team downed Dartmouth in decisive fashion, sweeping the Big Green, 25-19, 25-18, 25-13. With the win, Cornell remains unbeaten in Ivy League play at 3-0 with a record of 8-5 on the year.

"We did some good things tonight," said Trudy Vande Berg, The Wendy Schaenen '79 Head Coach Of Volleyball. "In the past we would have struggled when a team began to put pressure on us, but tonight we stuck to the game plan. Ultimately we played a good match."

For the second night in a row, Carla Sganderlla led the team in kills with 14. The senior outside hitter also finished with four block assists. Jada Stackhouse and Jillienne Bennett posted seven fills apiece, with Stackhouse also chipping in four block assists, while Jenna Phelps hit a team-high .583 (7-0-12).

Defensively, Lily Barber was outstanding with a match-high 21 digs. Shae Bauchens also finished in double-digits with 15 digs.

"Lily has really come along," said Vande Berg. "We want her to control that backrow and she's really stepped up over the last few weeks."

Zoe Chamness and Katie Randolph posted 22 and 18 assists, respectively, running an offense that hit .282 for the match.

Dartmouth (5-8, 1-2 Ivy) hit just .062 on the night and didn't have a single player reach double-digit kills, as Elise Petit had a team-high six.

"We served well and we slowed down their middles a ton," said Vande Berg. "Not only did we serve tough enough to keep their middles out of it, when they were set to we had a block in front of them, or we were able to dig it up."

The first set was the most competitive of the night as it featured six ties and five lead changes. With Dartmouth leading 12-10, the Big Red embarked on a 9-2 run and never looked back en route to the 25-19 victory. During the run, Cornell received an ace from Bauchens, a pair of kills from Sganderlla and Phelps, and a single kill from Bennett, Stackhouse and Avery Hanan.

Phelps opened up the second set with some incredibly strong serving to stake the home team a 5-0 lead as Cornell led wire-to-wire in the 25-18 win.

The Big Green hung tough to start the third set but a 7-0 Cornell run, this time thanks to the serving of Chamness, extended a two-point lead into an 18-9 advantage. The home team took the third set, 25-13.

The Big Red wraps up its four-game home-stand when it welcomes Brown and Yale to Newman Arena next weekend. Cornell will take on the Bears on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. and the Bulldogs on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 5 p.m.
