PRINCETON, N.J. – For the second consecutive week, the men's lightweight eight recorded a top-three finish, placing second and highlighting a solid day of racing for the Cornell men's lightweight rowing team on Sunday at the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.
Led by coxswain John Jaicks, the lightweight eight of Eric Lee, Cameron Bertossa, Louis Whittle, Alex Kost, Evan Krum, Ben Hopkins, Zach Thurston, and Andrew Hickey finished second among 30 boats in the first men's lightweight 8+ flight. The boat crossed the finish line in 13:14.933, nearly four seconds faster than the Princeton A boat that placed third in 13:18.355. The Penn A boat was the winner of the flight, winning the race in 13:09.700.
The Cornell second varsity eight turned in a strong performance, recording a top-eight finish. Coxed by James Cashen, the boat of Luke Small, Cid Decatur, Gerald Anderson, Eric Whitehead, Bradley Horvitz, Joe While, David Tigerman, and Malcolm Shure finished eighth in 13:35.915, edging out the Georgetown A boat (13:36.056) to finish in the top-eight. Cornell was the lone Ivy League school to place two boats in the top-eight of flight one.
Guided by coxswain Lindsey Gibbons, the Big Red third varsity eight composed of Henry McCarthy, Matthew Ptucha, Matthew Prince, Tristan Wiese, Kade Hawkins, James Brady, Alex Zincani, and Jules Kramer rowed to a 23rd place finish, recording a time of 14:21.201.
Cornell also raced three boats in the second men's lightweight 8+ flight, picking up two top-five finishes. The Cornell A boat, who recorded the fastest time among the 20-boat field before incurring a 20-second penalty, placed fourth in 13:59.876. The Cornell B boat followed in fifth with a time of 14:05.481.
The Big Red frosh novice boat rounded out the day for Cornell, turning in a time of 15:20.657 to place 18th. The boat, which was coxed by Amanda Klafter, included Anderson, Henry Koontz, McCarthy, James Brady, Brett Schlesinger, Archer Chiropolos Biggs, Sebastian Pardo, and Axel Ljunggren.
The Cornell men's lightweight rowing team will conclude its fall season when it returns home to host the Cornell Autumn Classic on Nov. 2 on the Cayuga Lake inlet in Ithaca, N.Y.
