Curlew Second Period Hat Trick Guides #3 Women's Ice Hockey to 9-1 Victory Over Brown

ITHACA, N.Y. - Senior Amy Curlew scores her first hat trick to lead the #3 Cornell women's ice hockey team to a 9-1 victory over Brown, Saturday afternoon.

Senior Jaime Bourbonnais, junior Maddie Mills and senior Micah Zandee-Hart joined Curlew with three points against Brown. Mills and Zandee-Hart notched one goal and two assists each, while Bourbonnais assisted three goals. Freshman Sydney Breza and senior Kristin O'Neill each had a two-point game with one goal and one assist.

The Big Red's scoring began in the fifth minute of the first period. Junior Devon Facchinato set up the play as Bourbonnais passed the puck to Mills, located at the hash marks, for a perfect tip into the net. O'Neill scored Cornell's second goal at 10:02 from just outside the goalie crease after bringing the puck in from the top of the circle.

The second period saw six unanswered goals by the Big Red. Curlew tallied her first of the night as she stood in front of the goalie six minutes into the period. Facing Bourbonnais, Curlew got a stick on Bourbonnais' shot to hit it around the goalie and into the net for a power play goal.

Leading 3-0 against the Bears, Cornell followed Curlew's goal with five goals in five minutes. At 14:49, Zandee-Hart slapped a shot into the goal from the center of the blue line. The power-play goal was assisted by junior Kendra Nealey. With 2:23 left, Curlew scored her second goal of the night. Positioned exactly like her first goal, she tipped Bourbonnais' shot into the net. Just 20 seconds later, junior Willow Slobodzian took a shot from the right-side of the blue line and the puck soared into the goal. Senior Grace Graham collected a rebound and sent it around the rink, behind the goal, for junior Joie Phelps to collect it and pass it straight to Slobodzian for the score.

Not even a minute later, Breza, sophomore Bella Kang and sophomore Sam Burke ran the ideal play as they brought they puck down the ice. Breza grabbed the puck from behind the Cornell goal and brought it about halfway down the ice where she passed it to Burke. Burke proceeded to bring the puck the rest of the way. Once she reached the circle, Burke made a backwards pass to Kang, who then dumped the puck into the goal.

With just 36 seconds left in the second period, Curlew scored her third goal of the afternoon. Curlew collected the rebound from O'Neill's shot to dump the puck into the net.

The third period saw far less action than the second. Breza scored the Big Red's final goal from just outside the goalie crease after receiving a pass from senior Paige Lewis.

The Bears were able to score a goal in the sixth minute of the final period. After Brown scored its goal, neither team was able to get past their respective goalies for the last 14:40.

Concentrating on defense but still dominating on the offense, Cornell outshot the Bears 57-14.

Junior goalie Lindsay Browning stopped six shots in the first two periods, while junior goalie Ally Dalaya stopped seven in the third.

Travel to Syracuse with the Big Red for its next game. The Cornell women's ice hockey team will face Syracuse on Nov. 26 at 7 p.m.
