Cold Shooting Hampers Big Red In OT Loss At Coppin State

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Cornell dug itself a hole it couldn't quite climb out of falling behind by 14 points, rallying to take a late lead and eventually falling 68-66 in overtime at Coppin State on Saturday evening. The loss, the Big Red's third of two points or fewer, dropped Cornell to 1-5, while the Eagles improved to 2-5. 

Jimmy Boeheim had a game-high 25 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, but the Big Red offense couldn't overcome a 23-of-79 shooting effort (29 percent) and its fourth consecutive game shooting under 30 percent from 3-point range (7-of-34, 21 percent). Thurston McCarty had 10 points as the only other double figure scorer for Cornell. Josh Warren chased becoming the first Cornell player to record a triple-double in school history with nine points, nine assists and seven rebounds. Both Terrance McBride and Dean Noll had four of the team's 14 steals. 

Kamar McKnight scored 22 points to lead Coppin State, while Andrew Robinson scored 15 points, including a 3-pointer late in overtime that turned out to be the game-winning basket. Koby Thomas scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds, but the Eagles were dominated on the backboards (54-43), particularly on the offensive glass (26-11).
 

First Half

• Cornell got off to a quick start, taking a 9-5 lead after consecutive dunks by Warren and McCarty in the half court over the first four minutes.
• A 15-0 Coppin State run put the Eagles comfortably in the lead as the Big Red continued to misfire.
• The Big Red missed 18 of its first 23 shots and went 1-for-12 from 3-point range with 10 turnovers to begin the game.
Dean Noll hit consecutive 3-pointers to get within nine with three minutes to play, but the Big Red would trail 32-22 at the half.
 

Second Half

• Cornell chipped away early in the second half, getting within four at the under 16 media timeout after a pair of free throws by McCarty, Cornell's first makes from the line in the game.
• Boeheim had a personal 7-0 run to tie the game with 12 minutes to play in regulation, hitting a runner in the lane to even the score at 37-37.
• The Big Red took its first lead since 9-7 when McBride hit a jumper with his toe on the line to go up 50-48.
• A 9-0 Big Red run gave the visitors their biggest lead at 53-48 with 2:41 remaining after a three-point play by Boeheim. 
• Each time Cornell scored, Coppin State seemed to answer. 
• In the final 92 seconds, the lead changed four times, the last time when Jordan Jones, who was 0-for-7 from the field at the time, canned a 3-pointer for Cornell to put the Big Red up 58-56.
• The Eagles tied it with 30 seconds left on a basket by McKnight.
• Cornell had the final possession of regulation, but Boeheim missed a leaner at the horn and the game went to overtime.
 

Overtime

• Cornell struck first in overtime, with Boeheim scoring five points quickly to put Cornell up 63-59 with 3:01 remaining.
• From there, Coppin State forced Cornell went 1-for-4 with a turnover.
• The Eagles took the lead for good on a tip-in by Koby Thomas a possession after he tied it with a pair of free throws, then pushed the lead to five (68-63) with 43 seconds left on an off-balanced 3-pointer by Andrew Robinson.
• Jones hit a second clutch 3-pointer for the Big Red to get within two, and after the Eagles missed two free throws, Cornell had one final chance.
Dean Noll got a look that was missed, grabbed his own rebound and misfired a second time a the horn sounded.
 

Next Up

• Cornell will conclude its four-game road swing when it heads to Navy on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. in Annapolis, Md.
• The Big Red leads the all-time series between the teams 3-1.
• Cornell earned a 61-50 victory over the Midshipmen last season at Newman Arena thanks to 25 second half points from Matt Morgan.
• Prior to that, the two teams last met in the 1954 NCAA Tournament, a 69-67 win for the Midshipmen.
