ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men's lightweight rowing team wrapped up a successful fall season on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Cornell Autumn Classic, recording two event wins and five top-three finishes on the Cayuga Lake inlet in Ithaca, N.Y.
After Saturday's results, the Big Red posted at least one top-three finish in every regatta in which it competed this fall, building a strong foundation for the 2020 spring season. Despite a strong showing this fall, there is still room for improvement and strides that can be made prior to the spring.
"The weather and water created some terrific late fall racing conditions and the athletes really threw themselves at the race distances," said Chris Kerber, the Henry E. Bartels '48 Head Coach of Men's Lightweight Rowing. "For the lights, we had solid performances from the athletes against a very strong field. We still have a big long road ahead to our spring season and many improvements to make."
Saturday's regatta featured two flights, with every event in each flight featuring a 3,000km race and 300m sprint. To determine the placings for every event, each boat's 300m sprint time was multiplied by three and added to its 3,000km time. The overall winner was the boat with the lowest time from the summation of these distances.
In the first flight, the Big Red raced six boats in the men's 2-, and the Cornell Lightweight B boat came out on top, winning the event with a combined time of 13:25.08. The Cornell Lightweight F boat placed third in 13:34.54, while the Cornell Lightweight E boat finished just behind in fourth with a mark of 13:34.62.
Another highlight of the first flight was the Big Red's 8+ frosh novice boat, which secured a second place finish in 12:11.25.
In the second flight, Cornell's lightweight 4+ boat stole the show, winning the event with a combined time of 12:54.35. The Cornell Lightweight 8+ A boat also put together a very strong race, finishing as the runner-up with a mark of 11:03.56.
This concludes the fall season for the Cornell men's lightweight rowing team. The Big Red will open its spring season on Saturday, March 28 at the Ithaca College Duals in Ithaca, N.Y.
