ITHACA, N.Y. -- Duquesne hit nine 3-pointers and took advantage of its attempts at the line to pick off Cornell 72-62 on Tuesday evening at Newman Arena. The Dukes improved to 8-2, running their winning streak to eight consecutive contests, while the Big Red slipped to 5-4 on the season.
The Big Red were led offensively by
Laura Bagwell-Katalinich, who continues to produce for Cornell game-in and game-out. Bagwell-Katalinich finished Tuesday's contest with 17 points on 8-of-16 shooting and 11 rebounds, notching her second-straight double double and her fifth of the nine-game season thus far. To date, Bagwell-Katalinich has scored in double-figures in 31 out of her 35 games in a Cornell uniform. Bagwell-Katalinich also added two assists and a block in the loss.
Cornell had multiple other student-athletes contribute, as six other players had at least five points.
Dylan Higgins scored a season-best nine points,
Theresa Grace Mbanefo notched eight with six rebounds and two blocks, and
Samantha Widmann chipped in eight points, four rebounds and three assists.
Freshman
Shannon Mulroy was credited with seven points, a career-high six rebounds, and four assists for the Big Red, which had 16 assists as a team on 25 made baskets. Cornell held the Dukes to 38 percent shooting overall, including 17 percent in the final quarter, as it got within five points with 1:35 remaining in the game after trailing by as many as 15.
The Big Red fought for the full-40 minutes, but Duquesne's steady 3-point shooting and consistency from the free throw line prevented Cornell from being able to overtake the Dukes. Duquesne sank nine shots from behind the arc and shot 31% from 3-point land as a team, outscoring Cornell 27-9 from long range.
The Dukes were also lethal from the free throw line, making 15-of-18 attempts and shooting 83% from the charity stripe. Libby Bazelak played a huge part in this, going 10-of-12 from the line. Cornell shot just 56% (9-of-16) from the free throw line, proving costly down the stretch.
For the first time this season, the Big Red was unable to out-rebound its opponent, but remaining even on the boards with a much-bigger Duquesne roster is something for which Cornell can hold its head high. The Big Red and Dukes finished the contest deadlocked at 39 rebounds apiece.
Bazelak notched 21 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and five steals to lead the Dukes, with Amanda Kalin posting 14 points and six boards and Amaya Hamilton rounding out the double figure scorers with 13.
The Big Red women's basketball team will be back in action when it heads to St. Bonaventure for a matchup on Sunday, Dec. 29 at 1 p.m. in Olean, N.Y.
