WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Junior
Jimmy Boeheim scored 26 points, but Hartford's six double figure scorers helped the Hawks rally past the Big Red 80-76 on Sunday afternoon at Chase Arena. Cornell fell to 1-9, while Hartford improved to 6-7 in the pre-Christmas matinee.
Boeheim hit 10-of-22 shots from the floor, including four 3-pointers, and added three rebounds and three assists to lead Cornell, who built a 15-point advantage in the second half and led for more than 36 minutes in the game.
Terrance McBride notched 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals and
Jordan Jones chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds. Senior
Josh Warren scored eight points with six rebounds and four assists,
Dean Noll had seven points, four rebounds and two helpers and
Kobe Dickson added six points, five rebounds, three steals, two assists and a blocked shot in 20 energy-filled minutes.
Bryan Knapp rounded out the iron seven with five points and two assists. Cornell held a 38-30 edge on the backboards and handed out 18 assists on its 30 baskets.
Traci Carter had 21 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals while making 5-of-6 3-pointers to lead the Hawks, while both Miroslav Stafl and Malik Ellison had 14 points apiece. Ellison added 10 rebounds and five blocked shots in the win. Moses Flowers (11 points, five rebounds), D.J. Mitchell and Hunter Marks (10 points each) rounded out the double figure scorers. The Hawks hit 13-of-24 from beyond the arc, including 8-of-12 in the second 20 minutes.
First Half
• The Big Red never trailed in the first half, taking the lead for good at 5-2 after a 3-pointer by
Jordan Jones two minutes in.
• Cornell hit its first two 3-pointers on its way to an 8-2 edge.
• The Hawks got within three points at 22-19 and 30-27, but each time the Big Red extended the lead back out.
• Boeheim scored five straight as part of a quick 7-0 run to push the Cornell lead to 10 (37-27) at the final media timeout.
• Cornell held a 23-18 edge on the glass, held Hartford to 36 percent shooting and assisted on 11 of its 15 first half baskets.
• Both teams played just seven players in the first 20 minutes.
• Besides Boeheim's 16 points,
Jordan Jones had eight,
Josh Warren grabbed five rebounds and
Kobe Dickson had four points, two rebounds, two steals and a block in key minutes off the bench.
Second Half
• The teams combined to score 27 points in the first four minutes of the second half, draining 7-of-8 3-pointers during the span.
• Hartford was only able to chip one point off Cornell's lead, which was 53-46 at the first media timeout.
• The lead was 15 (67-52) with 9:47 left when Warren scored in the post and was 14 at the under eight timeout.
• That started a 21-6 Hartford run over the next seven minutes as the Hawks hit 8-of-12 shots, including 3-of-4 treys, and turned it over four times.
• The home team took its first lead of the night with 2:26 left when Stafl scored inside on consecutive possessions to go up 76-73.
• The Big Red looked as though it got a stop on the other end down two with under 20 seconds left, but instead Cornell was called for a foul on a 3-point shot.
• Marks hit 2-of-3 free throws to make it a two possession game, and free throws and a
Dean Noll jumper right before the buzzer closed the scoring..
Next Up
• The Big Red closes out the 2019 portion of its schedule when it visits Penn State on Sunday, Dec. 29 at noon at the Bryce Jordan Center. The contest will be televised on ESPNU.
• Penn State leads the all-time series 6-5 and has won three straight, including a buzzer-beating 72-71 decision in the last meeting on Nov. 21, 2014 in Charleston, S.C.
• The Big Red's last win over the Nittany Lions came in a 74-65 victory on Dec. 5, 1972 at Barton Hall in Ithaca.
