WACO, Texas – Senior
Will Simoneit was 2-for-3 with a double and a two-run home run, but Baylor completed a three-game sweep of the Big Red baseball team on Sunday with a 12-4 victory at Baylor Ballpark.
Simoneit's first homer of the season and the eighth of his collegiate career came with one out after freshman
Justin Taylor led off the game with a base hit to center, staking Cornell (0-3) to a 2-0 lead on 16th-ranked Baylor (7-0).
But the Bears countered immediately with two runs in the bottom of the first, then they pounced for seven more in the second to blow the game open.
The Big Red bullpen steadied the ship from there, yielding just three runs over the final six innings. Freshman
Jonathan Zacharias was effective through four frames.
Cornell's final two runs came in the eighth, starting with a leadoff walk by pinch-hitting sophomore
Dave Giuliano. Simoneit followed with a two-bagger that put runners on the corners, then sophomore
Ramon Garza drove in Giuliano with an infield hit. A walk from junior
Matt Collins loaded the bases, and freshman
Austin Flematti's one-out sacrifice fly to center scored Simoneit.
The Big Red returns to action Friday, Saturday and Sunday with a three-game series at VCU.
