Baseball Splits Pair Of Pitcher's Duels

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Cornell and Yale split a pair of pitcher's duels on Saturday afternoon at Yale Field, winning the opener 3-0 before dropping the nightcap 2-0. The Big Red moved to 5-12 (2-3 Ivy), while the Bulldogs are now 9-13 (3-2 Ivy) after the split.

Game 1
Junior Colby Wyatt continued his dominant start to the season with 7.1 scoreless innings of work, and a pair of leadoff doubles from senior Josh Arndt, and a leadoff double from Matt Collins helped the baseball team to a 3-0 victory over Yale in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Yale Field.

Entering the game as the Ivy League's leader in ERA among qualified pitchers, Wyatt outdueled Yale's Scott Politz – the 2017 Ivy League Pitcher of the Year. He yielded five hits and two walks before departing with a two-run lead and two runners on in the eighth.

Junior John Natoli came on from the bullpen and – after a double steal moved the tying run into scoring position – retired his first two batters to escape the jam. Cornell (5-11, 2-2 Ivy League) tacked on an insurance run in the ninth and although Natoli's streak of consecutive batters retired ended at 24 after an infield hit in the ninth, he closed out his second save of the season.

The Big Red took a 1-0 lead on Yale (8-13, 2-2), which has posted the best regular-season record in the Ivy League each of the last two seasons, in the third inning. Collins led off with a double to right-center, then junior Alex Carnegie pulled another double down the line in left to drive him in.

The first insurance run then came in the seventh after Arndt's second two-bagged led off the frame. A sacrifice bunt by freshman Justin Taylor moved him up to third, then a wild pitch from Politz allowed Arndt to score.

Game 2
Alex Stiegler hurled a five-hit complete game shutout and Yale scratched together a pair of runs for a 2-0 victory in the nightcap.

Five different Cornell players had hits, with Adam Saks posting his second double of the season, but Stiegler was able to control the game throughout. He struck out six, walked three and stranded seven baserunners.

Cornell's leadoff runner reached base four times in the first six innings and five times overall, but only got a runner as far as third base once. In a scoreless game, Saks doubled down the leftfield line and advanced to third one batter later, but Stiegler induced consecutive infield popups to get out of the inning.

Yale fot on the board in the bottom of the third after Simon Whiteman singled to open the inning, stole second and advanced to third on an error on the throw, then came around to score on a one-out double by Jake Gehri. The Bulldogs scored an insurance run in the sixth on a single and a stolen base by Brian Ronai, followed by an RBI single by Dai Dai Otaka.

Stiegler faced the minimum in the final three innings and struck out the side in the seventh, allowing only a leadoff single in the eighth that was erased on a double play.

The two teams will play the rubber game on Sunday, March 31 at 2 p.m.
