HANOVER, N.H. – The Cornell women's lacrosse team fell to No. 20 Dartmouth, 15-8, Saturday afternoon in a matchup that featured two of the three teams tied for first place in the Ivy League heading into the game.
The Big Red (8-6, 4-2 Ivy League) was the first on the board with a goal from
Shannon Bertscha, assisted by
Caroline Allen, just under two minutes into the first half.
The Big Green (10-4, 5-1 Ivy League) answered back with its first 4-0 spurt of the first half to take the 4-1 lead.
Cornell responded with two consecutive goals from
Tomasina Leska and
Olivia Jensen, respectively. Leska found the back of the net after a strong dodge where she shuck multiple Big Green defenders before putting it home with 21:02 remaining in the opening frame. Jensen's goal came with the shot clock at three seconds. The sophomore attacker fired a rocket past Dartmouth goalkeeper Kiera Vrindten to cut the Big Green's lead to one.
Dartmouth then went on its second 4-0 run of the opening stanza, led by Emily Mastrio's two goals making the score 8-3. Mastrio ended the contest with five goals, which led all scorers.
Grace Paletta ended the scoring run with 5:07 left in the first half.
Olivia Jensen found Paletta from behind the net and the sophomore quickly put home the goal. Following Paletta's tally, both teams exchanged goals before the end of the first half to give the Big Green the 9-5 advantage at the midway point.
Darmouth netted the first three goals of the second half, with two coming from Mastrio, making the score 12-5.
Allen got the Big Red on the board in the second half with an unassisted goal just under eight minutes in. The teams then went onto exchange goals for the remainder of the contest. For the Big Red, Leska and Bertscha netted their second goals of the contest.
Despite the result, junior goalkeeper
Katie McGahan registered 13 saves on the afternoon, tying her season high.
The Big Green led the possession battle, winning 19 of the contests 25 draw controls and outshooting Cornell, 44-20.
Cornell returns to action next weekend for its regular season finale against No. 11 Princeton at 3 p.m. next Saturday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
