ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's hockey team has announced that seniors
Yanni Kaldis and
Jeff Malott, and junior
Morgan Barron will serve as tri-captains for the upcoming season.
Kaldis and Malott are both part of a class that has helped the Big Red earn an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament in each of their first three seasons – a feat the program hasn't seen since 1970 – while Barron enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign.
"Speaking with all the players, it became quite clear through the spring and summer who they feel should be leading us," said
Mike Schafer, who returns for his 25th season as the Jay R. Bloom '77 Head Coach of Men's Hockey at Cornell.
Kaldis is a three-time pick to the All-Ivy League first team, and he was selected to the All-ECAC Hockey second team last year. His 24 assists led the team, and it was the most posted by a Cornell defenseman since Steve Wilson in 1995-96. Traditionally among the leaders in team ice time, Kaldis also owns a plus-22 rating over his first three collegiate seasons.
Malott comes into the season with 40 career points, having scored six goals in each of the past three seasons. Injuries cut short last year's campaign, when he posted 12 points over final 16 appearances.
Barron led the team in goals (15), power-play goals (seven) and overall scoring (34 points) last season, and he became just the third Cornell forward to earn All-ECAC Hockey first-team honors since 1987 (Matt Moulson 2005;
Riley Nash 2009). Also named to the All-Ivy League first team, Barron was selected by league coaches as one of three finalists for ECAC Hockey Best Defensive Forward.
After winning the program's second straight Cleary Cup (ECAC Hockey regular season title) and its 23rd Ivy League crown last year, the Big Red continues preparation for the new season with the first exhibition game scheduled against Nipissing at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20 at Lynah Rink.
