Field Hockey Travels to Philadelphia to Face First Ivy Opponent

ITHACA, N.Y. - After 3-1 start to the 2019 season at home, the Cornell field hockey team will travel to Philadelphia to face their first Ivy League opponent, Penn, on Saturday.

About the Big Red

  • In scoring 11 goals in its first four games, the Big Red has its most offensive start to the season since 2016 when Cornell had scored 13 goals in its first four games. In addition to overcoming No. 18 Syracuse, 2-1, for just the third time in program history, the Big Red earned a double overtime win against Lock Haven, 3-2. After falling to No. 14 Saint Joseph's, 4-2, Cornell came back to win, 4-1, against Lafayette on Monday (Sept. 23).
  • Freshman midfielder Caroline Ramsey and junior forward Grace Royer lead the team with six points each. Ramsey has scored three goals for the points while Royer has notched two goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Maddy Conklin comes in a close third with five points on one goal and three assists.
  • Ramsey became the first of the class of 2023 to score a goal on the season. She totaled two goals throughout the first weekend, one against Syracuse and one against Lock Haven. She scored her third goal against Lafayette.
  • Royer had an outstanding game against Lafayette. Scoring two goals and assisting on another Royer led her team to a win. She also assisted a goal against Syracuse.
  • Conklin assisted on the overtime goal against Lock Haven, in addition to scoring the first goal of the game. Conklin also assisted on the first Big Red goal against SJU and the third goal against Lafayette.
  • Junior midfielder Julianne Mangano scored her first career goal against Lafayette on an assist by freshman forward Natalie Stone.
  • Totaling 18 wins in her career, senior goalie Maddie Henry's three wins on the season brought her up in Cornell's all-time records. Henry is currently tied at fifth all-time with Melanie Jue (2008-09), Lizzy Goldblatt (2004-07) and Amy Wright (1990-93). With one more win Henry will be tied for second place all-time.
 

Head Coach Andy Smith

  • After serving as the head coach of the field hockey team at the University of the Pacific, Smith was named the head coach of the Cornell field hockey team in May of 2019. 
  • Smith comes to East Hill after leading the Pacific Tigers to four regular season conference titles in six seasons. Smith also coached four student athletes to All-American honors, in addition to five athletes being selected to participate in FIH World level events.
  • Smith brings a new staff of assistant coaches to Cornell this season. Laura Hurff and Johnny Orozco joined the Big Red staff as assistant coaches after successful stints in their respective USA National Teams. Taylor Dempsey joins the team as a volunteer assistant coach after a decorated playing career at the University of the Pacific.
 

National Appeal

  • The Big Red has eight different states, as well as Canada and South Africa, represented on the team of 23.
  • For the first year New Jersey ties Pennsylvania as the most represented state. Pennsylvania has been the most represented state since 2015. A total of 10 players call New Jersey or Pennsylvania home, five each. The other states with multiple representatives are New York (3) and Texas (2), plus one student-athletes from Connecticut, Maine, Maryland and Texas. 
  • There are three international student-athletes as well, two from British Columbia, Canada and one from South Africa.
  • In addition to our athletes, we have two coaches from California (Hurff and Dempsey), one from Delaware (Orozco) and head coach Andy Smith hails from Doncaster, England.
 

About Penn

  • Playing against three ranked teams, No. 10 Wake Forest, No. 1 North Carolina and No. 15 Saint Joseph's, the Quakers have lost their first five games on the season. Penn let two goals into the net against Wake Forest, six goals against North Carolina and three goals against Saint Joseph's. The Quakers were able to score two goals each against Monmouth and Villanova in 4-2 and 3-2 losses, respectively.
  • Sophomore Miranda Jiranek leads the team with six points and three goals. She scored both goals against Villanova and one against Monmouth.
  • Sophomore Gracyn Banks scored the second goal against Monmouth.
  • Senior goalkeeper Ava Rosati has stayed on the field for the entirety of all five games. Rosati has a save percentage of .630 with 29 saves on the season.
 

The Series vs Penn

  • The Big Red first played the Quakers in 1976 and have competed in a matchup 43 times since. 
  • Penn holds the 27-14-2 advantage in the all-time series. The Quakers dominated the series in the beginning, posting a 17-2-2 record from 1978-1998.
  • Cornell has won seven of the last 14 meetings, with the series being extremely close in recent years. 19 of the last 27 meetings have been decided by one goal, with nine of them being overtime contests.
  • In the Big Red-Quaker matchup in 2018 Penn won, 1-0.
