About the Big Red
- In scoring 13 goals in its first five games, the Big Red has its most offensive start to the season since 2015 when Cornell had scored 14 goals in its first five games. In addition to overcoming No. 18 Syracuse, 2-1, for just the third time in program history, the Big Red earned a double overtime win against Lock Haven, 3-2. After falling to No. 14 Saint Joseph's, 4-2, Cornell came back to win, 4-1, against Lafayette on Monday (9/23). The Big Red fell to Penn, 5-2, in its Ivy League opener (9/28).
- Junior forward Grace Royer leads the team with 10 points on four goals and two assists. Royer scored both goals in the 5-2 loss against Penn on Saturday, in addition to the two goals and two assists previously had.
- Sophomore forward Claire Jones and freshman midfielder Caroline Ramsey both follow Royer with six points each. Jones earned the points with two goals and two assists while Ramsey has scored three goals.
- Jones scored her first two goals during the opening weekend for the Big Red, against Syracuse and Lock Haven. She assisted both of Royer's goals against Penn on Saturday.
- Ramsey became the first of the class of 2023 to score a goal on the season. She totaled two goals throughout the first weekend, one against Syracuse and one against Lock Haven. She scored her third goal against Lafayette.
- Senior midfielder Maddy Conklin assisted on the overtime goal against Lock Haven, in addition to scoring the first goal of the game. Conklin also assisted on the first Big Red goal against SJU and the third goal against Lafayette. She totals five points.
- Junior midfielder Julianne Mangano scored her first career goal against Lafayette on an assist by freshman forward Natalie Stone.
- Totaling 18 wins in her career, senior goalie Maddie Henry's three wins on the season brought her up in Cornell's all-time records. Henry is currently tied at fifth all-time with Melanie Jue (2008-09), Lizzy Goldblatt (2004-07) and Amy Wright (1990-93). With one more win Henry will be tied for second place all-time.
- After serving as the head coach of the field hockey team at the University of the Pacific, Smith was named the head coach of the Cornell field hockey team in May of 2019.
- Smith comes to East Hill after leading the Pacific Tigers to four regular season conference titles in six seasons. Smith also coached four student athletes to All-American honors, in addition to five athletes being selected to participate in FIH World level events.
- Smith brings a new staff of assistant coaches to Cornell this season. Laura Hurff and Johnny Orozco joined the Big Red staff as assistant coaches after successful stints in their respective USA National Teams. Taylor Dempsey joins the team as a volunteer assistant coach after a decorated playing career at the University of the Pacific.
National Appeal
- The Big Red has eight different states, as well as Canada and South Africa, represented on the team of 23.
- For the first year New Jersey ties Pennsylvania as the most represented state. Pennsylvania has been the most represented state since 2015. A total of 10 players call New Jersey or Pennsylvania home, five each. The other states with multiple representatives are New York (3) and Texas (2), plus one student-athletes from Connecticut, Maine, Maryland and Texas.
- There are three international student-athletes as well, two from British Columbia, Canada and one from South Africa.
- In addition to our athletes, we have two coaches from California (Hurff and Dempsey), one from Delaware (Orozco) and head coach Andy Smith hails from Doncaster, England.
About Colgate
- Playing two ranked teams so far, No. 20 Albany and No. 19 Syracuse, the Raiders have lost seven of their first nine games on the season. Colgate has won two games since the start of the season, against Saint Louis (8/31, 4-1) and Towson (9/8, 4-3 OT), and has scored 14 goals in all nine games.
- Within the Patriot League, the Raiders have fallen to Lehigh (2-1, 9/21) and Lafayette (4-0, 9/28).
- Junior forward Taylor Casamassa leads the team with nine points on three goals and three assists. Her goals were scored on the Saint Louis, Towson, and Lehigh nets with assists against Saint Louis and Lock Haven.
- Senior midfielder Nicole Salamone is a close second with eight points on three goals and two assists. She scored one goal against Saint Louis and two against Towson.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Unger started each of the Raiders' games with 432:27 minutes on the field. She has made 47 saves for a .691 save percentage. Junior goalkeeper Emma Goldberg has played a total of 106:16 for eight saves and a .533 save percentage.
The Series vs Colgate
- The Big Red first played the Raiders in 1974 and have competed in a matchup 46 times since.
- Cornell and Colgate have been consistent opponents since just about the beginning of each of their programs. 1974 was the third year of existence for Cornell and the second for Colgate.
- The series has been tight throughout the history of the two programs but the Big Red has been able to pull ahead in recent years. Winning five of the last six meetings, the Cornell field hockey team has earned the 23-20-3 advantage.
