KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Junior Sivasangari Subramaniam finished second and freshman Wen Li Lai advanced as far as the quarterfinals to give the Cornell women's squash team a strong presence at Malaysia's national championships last week.

The seeding for the Premier Women's bracket held true through every round, setting up a championship match between Subramaniam and 14th-year professional Wee Wern Low. Subramaniam took the first game against the top seed and later forced a fifth game, but ultimately came up short against Low.

Subramaniam advanced to the finals after defeated a pair of sisters in the semifinals and quarterfinals. She topped Aira Azman in three games first, then eliminated Aifa Binti Azman with a five-game affair to set up the showdown with Low.

The victory over the elder Azman also avenged a loss suffered by Subramaniam's new Big Red teammate, Lai, in the quarterfinals. Seeded in the 5-8 band, Lai won her first-round match in four games against Sehveetrraa Kumar before a four-game setback to Azman.

Subramaniam is currently ranked 37th in the world by the Professional Squash Association, and Lai is ranked 74th.
