Fencing Places Three on All-Ivy Squads at Ivy League Round Robin

2/10/2020 10:30:00 AM

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore Megan Eno earned first-team All-Ivy honors for the second time in her career on Sunday, Feb. 9, after placing third overall in the epee competition at the 2020 Ivy League Fencing Round Robin, held at Harvard's Gordon Indoor Track.

Eno becomes the first two-time first team honoree since Victoria Wines (2014, 2015) and is just the second fencer in program history to earn the first team designation twice in a career. She is one of four fencers in Big Red history to earn first team honors, which includes Christine Hamori ('85), Meghan Phair ('06) and Wines.

Joining Eno on the All-Ivy teams are freshmen Ying Cao (foil) and Gabrielle Hill (epee). With three fencers earning All-Ivy honors, it's the first time the program has placed multiple fencers since the 2016 season (Wines, Angelica Gangemi, Gabriella Zusin). This is the fourth time in program history that Cornell has placed multiple on the All-Ivy teams. Cao placed fourth in the foil, while Hill tied for fifth in epee.

Eno went 10-5 overall in epee, while Hill finished 11-6 in her tie for fifth place. Cao took fourth in foil with a 10-4 record. Eno's +18 touch differential was good for second best in her weapon.

Close to a top 10 finish was Gillian Harrill who finished with an 8-9 record in saber, placing 11th.

As a team, No. 10-ranked Cornell took home a record of 2-4 at the Round Robin, picking up wins over Brown (17-10) and Yale (15-12). The Big Red were defeated by Harvard (15-12), Penn (17-10), Princeton (16-11) and Columbia (15-12).

Cornell (24-10) finished day one of the round robin with a 2-1 record, falling to No. 7 Harvard in the first bout before defeating unranked Brown and Yale. The Big Red was unable to carry the momentum in Sunday unfortunately, dropping three consecutive bouts to No. 8 Penn, No. 1 Princeton and No. 2 Columbia.

Cornell's epee squad stood out with four wins over the weekend, defeating Brown (5-4), Yale (6-3), Princeton (5-4) and Columbia (6-3). The Big Red foils won in three bouts, defeating Harvard (5-4), Brown (5-4) and Yale (5-4).

Up Next: Cornell is poised to host the NCAA Northeast Regional in Barton Hall on Sunday, March 8.
