Know Your Foes: Brown University and Yale University

The Cornell women's ice hockey travels with hopes for a successful road weekend against Brown and Yale. These will serve as the final away, and Ivy League, games in the regular season.

 

Brown

  • Overall, the Bears own a 3-19-3 record with an ECAC Hockey record of 2-14-2. Brown opened the season with five straight losses before gaining a 2-1 win over Rensselaer (11/8). Most recently, the Bears tied St. Lawrence (2/8) after falling to Clarkson (2/7). 
  • Throughout the season, Brown has defeated ECACH opponent Rensselaer (11/8 & 1/18) and tied Dartmouth (12/6) and St. Lawrence (2/8). On Dec. 7, the Bears fell to Harvard in overtime. 
  • Sophomore forward Shay Maloney leads the team with 12 points on six goals and six assists. Most recently, she scored the power-play goal at St. Lawrence (2/8).
  • Senior Maybelline Beiring follows with nine points on one goal and eight assists. She most recently assisted the goal at St. Lawrence.
  • Senior goalie Calla Isaac leads the goalies with 17 starts with 1028:30 in goal. Isaac has 650 saves and 61 goals against for a .914 save percentage and a 3.56 GAA.
  • Isaac is 26th in the nation in save percentage and 49th in goals against average. 
  • As a team, the Bears are 39th in the nation in scoring offense (1.16), 39th in scoring defense (3.80) and 39th in scoring margin (-2.64).
  • Brown's power-play team ranks 38th in the nation (10.2%) and the penalty kill team is 40th with a 72.4% kill rate.
 

The Series

  • Friday's matchup features the oldest varsity teams in women's college hockey history as Brown's was formed in 1965 and Cornell's in 1972.
  • The schools have met 97 times, with the first being in the 1972-73 season.
  • Last year, the Bears snapped the Big Red's 24-game unbeaten streak in the series downing Cornell 4-3. 
  • For its home game, the Big Red came back to win 4-1 to lead the series 52-35-9.
  • Earlier in the 2019-20 season, Cornell extended the all-time lead to 53-35-9 with a 9-1 win on Nov. 16.

Yale

  • The Bulldogs sit fifth in the ECAC Hockey League with 11 wins and seven losses. Overall, Yale's 14-11 record owns wins against LIU to begin the season (10/25-26) along with a split weekend in New England to start off ECAC Hockey play - a win at Dartmouth (11/1) and a loss at Harvard (11/2). 
  • Most recently, Yale split the North Country weekend with a 3-0 shutout victory at St. Lawrence (2/7) and a 2-0 shutout loss at Clarkson (2/8). 
  • Throughout the season, the Bulldogs have defeated ECACH opponents Dartmouth (11/1 & 12/7), Union (11/8 & 1/18), Rensselaer (11/9 & 1/17), Clarkson (1/10), St. Lawrence (1/11 & 2/7) and Brown (1/21 & 1/22).
  • Sophomore forward Claire Dalton leads the team with 23 points on eight goals and 15 assists. Dalton has six multi-point games on the season. She most recently earned an assist against Quinnipiac (2/1).
  • Dalton is tied for 42nd in the nation with 0.60 assists per game, 50th with 0.92 points per game, and tied for 95th in goals per game (0.32).
  • Freshman forward Elle Hartje follows with 22 points on nine goals and 13 assists. The first year also has six multi-point games on the season with her most recent being at St. Lawrence; she assisted two goals against the Saints. 
  • Hartje is tied with Cornell sophomore, Gillis Frechette, for 58th in the nation in points per game (0.88) and tied for 71st in assists per game (0.52). 
  • Hartje and freshman Grace Lee are tied for 78th in the nation, with Cornell senior Amy Curlew, in goals per game (0.36). 
  • Hartje and Lee sit in the top-15 of the nation's freshmen. Hartje's 0.88 points per game is sixth while Lee's 0.76 points per game is tied for 13th. 
  • The Bulldogs hold three final skaters in the top-100 in the nation in points per game: sophomore Emma Seitz - 66th (0.84), sophomore Charlotte Welch - 75th (0.80), Lee - 88th (0.76).
  • Welch leads the team with 0.44 goals per game, which is good for 44th in the nation (tied with Cornell senior Grace Graham).
  • Seitz leads the team with 0.64 assists per game, which is good for 35th in the nation (tied with Cornell junior Maddie Mills). She also leads Yale's defenders with 0.84 points per game; 12th among the nation's defenders.
  • Scoring four power-play goals, Welch leads her team on the power play.
  • Junior Gianna Meloni leads the goalies with 14 starts for 867:18 in goal. She has 32 goals against and 340 saves for a 2.21 GAA and a .914 save percentage. 
  • Meloni's GAA is good for 21st in the nation and her save percentage is 27th.
  • Senior Tera Hofmann follows closely with 11 starts for 596:10 in goal. Hofmann has 20 goals against and 186 saves for a 2.01 GAA and a .903 save percentage.
  • Hofman's GAA leads Yale with 17th place in the nation and her save percentage is 43rd.
  • As a team, the Bulldogs are 19th in the nation in scoring offense (2.72), 18th in scoring defense (2.24) and 15h in scoring margin (0.48).
  • Yale's power-play team is tied for 14th in the nation (16.7%) and the penalty kill team is 3rd with a 92.8% kill rate.
 

The Series

  • Saturday's game will mark the 75th all-time meeting between the two schools. Cornell has dominated the series, which dates back to the 1975-76 season, as it owns a 61-12-2 record against the Bulldogs. 
  • During the 2018-19 season, the Big Red went 2-0 against Yale. In New Haven, Conn., Cornell beat the Bulldogs, 4-3, before finding a 4-0 victory over Yale at home in Ithaca, N.Y. in February.
  • Earlier in the 2019-20 season, the Big Red defeated the Bulldogs, 6-0, on Nov. 15. Senior Amy Curlew and sophomore Gillis Frechette scored two goals each while senior Kristin O'Neill and junior Maddie Mills tallied the final two.
