Know Your Foes: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Union College

The #1 Cornell women's ice hockey team returns home to host Rensselaer and Union for its final weekend of the 2019-20 regular season.

  

Rensselaer

  • Before starting ECAC Hockey play in November, Rensselaer collected an overall record of 0-6-1 with two game series against Minnesota State - Mankato (Sept. 27-28), Merrimack (Oct. 4-5) and Penn State (Oct. 11-12) with a single tie against Holy Cross (Oct. 27). Since the opening of conference play, the Engineers have lost 20 conference games, three of which were one goal decisions, against St. Lawrence (Nov. 1), 2-1, #5 Clarkson (Nov. 2), 5-4, and Brown (Nov. 8), 2-1.
  • Senior forward Sabrina Repaci leads the team with eight points on two goals and six assists. Most recently, Repaci earned an assist against Dartmouth (Saturday).
  • Junior forward Lauren Severson follows with seven points on two goals and five assists. Severson contributed three points in the last four games, one goal and two assists.
  • Freshman Ena Nystrom leads the goalies with 21 games for 1205:07 in goal. With 773 saves and 70 goals against, Nystrom has a .917 save percentage and a 3.49 goals against average. 
  • Nystrom's save percentage is ranked 27th in the nation while her goals against average is good for 49th in the nation.
  • As a team, the Engineers are 41st in the nation in scoring offense (0.66), 36th in scoring defense (3.41) and 41th in scoring margin (-2.75).
  • Rensselaer's power-play team is tied for 40th in the nation (7,5%) and the penalty kill team is 26th with a 82.7% kill rate.
 

The Series

  • The series between these two teams dates back to the 2006-07 season with Cornell holding a 25-8-0 advantage.
  • Earlier in the 2019-20 season, Cornell beat Rensselaer, 2-0. The defense stole the show as senior Jaime Bourbonnais and senior Micah Zandee-Hart each scored a goal.
  • The Big Red played opposite the Engineers five times during the 2018-19 season. In the first of the series, on Feb. 2, Kristin O'Neill led the 5-0 decision with three goals. Including O'Neill, five skaters earned multiple points.
  • To close the regular season against Rensselaer, Cornell earned an 8-2 victory on Feb. 22. O'Neill scored the first goal in just 14 seconds. 14 different players earned points while eight had a multipoint game led by O'Neill's three points.
  • Opening the 2018-19 postseason, Rensselaer and Cornell played in a three-game series for the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals. On March 1, the Big Red won 2-1 in overtime but the Engineers evened the weekend with a 2-0 win on March 2. Cornell advanced to the conference's semifinals with a 6-1 victory on March 3. To close the weekend, Bella Kang scored her first career goal.

Union

  • Before starting ECAC Hockey play in November, Union collected an overall record of 0-5-1. Since the opening of conference play, the Dutchwomen found two victories against Brown (Nov. 9) and Quinnipiac (Nov. 16). Since the start of 2020, Union earned victories against Brown, 3-1 (Jan. 17), Rensselaer, 5-1 & 2-0 (Jan. 24-25).
  • Overall, the Dutchwomen have a 2-15-4 record with a 5-12-3 ECAC Hockey record.
  • Sophomore Grace Heiting and freshman Leah Herrfort lead the team with 13 points each. 
  • Heiting most recently scored a goal against Harvard (Saturday) for a total of six goals and seven assists.
  • Herrfort notched a goal against Quinnipiac (Feb. 7) for her five goals and eight assists. 
  • Freshman Bella McKee leads the goalies with 26 starts for 1590:52 in goal. With 816 saves and 73 goals against, McKee has a .918 save percentage and 2.75 goals against average.
  • McKee's .918 save percentage is good for 22nd in the nation while her 2.75 goals against average is good for 36th in the nation.
  • Rachel de Perio, Cheyenne Harris and Megan Ryan have each scored a shot-handed goal. The team's three short-handed goals are tied for fourth in the ECAC Hockey League. 
  • As a team, the Dutchwomen are 36th in the nation in scoring offense (1.53), 32ndth in scoring defense (3.22) and 35th in scoring margin (-1.69).
  • Union's power-play team is tied for 36th in the nation (10.7%) and the penalty kill team is 25th with a 83.3% kill rate.
 

The Series

  • Cornell and Union first met during the 2003-04 season with the Big Red leading the all-time series, 29-1-3.
  • Earlier in the 2019-20 season, the Big Red tied Union, 1-1. The Dutchwomen scored first but the Big Red's senior Kristin O'Neill tied the score in the second period.
  • Cornell won both meetings in the 2018-19 season, the first of which being a 7-0 shutout on Feb. 1, 2019. The Big Red had five players with multipoint performances led by Kristin O'Neill's three points.
  • The second game last season closed with a smaller score margin. Grace Graham and Pippy Gerace '19 combined for the 2-1 win on Feb. 23, 2019.
  • The program's lone loss against Union occurred on Feb. 28, 2004 in a 3-1 decision in Schenectady, N.Y.
