Men's Hoops Falls To Harvard on Senior Day, 67-58

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Harvard held Cornell to under 40 percent shooting and kept the Big Red at bay throughout the second half to clinch a 20-win season with a 67-58 triumph on Saturday evening at Newman Arena. The loss spoiled a game Senior Day effort from the Big Red, who dropped to 6-19 (3-9 Ivy). The Crimson improved to 20-7 (9-3 Ivy).

Juniors Terrance McBride (15 points, four rebounds) and Bryan Knapp (10 points) highlighted the box score, but it was a night to honor Noah Gear, Thurston McCarty and captain Josh Warren in their final home game. All three earned starts with Gear getting his first opportunity in the first five.

Kobe Dickson added eight points and four rebounds and Dean Noll notched seven points, four boards and four steals. Both fouled out, two of the three Big Red players to be disqualified. Cornell was whistled for 27 fouls leading to 33 Harvard free throw attempts.

Robert Baker scored a team-high 12 points and Rio Haskett notched 11 to lead the Crimson. Justin Bassey scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds. Harvard held a 34-28 edge on the backboards and outscored Cornell 14-5 on second chance points - the difference in the game.

First Half

• Harvard scored the game's first six points, Bryan Knapp scored the next eight for Cornell and Harvard answered with a 12-1 run to start the game on a see-saw trajectory.
Dean Noll scored six straight and Kobe Dickson finished a tough layup inside as the Big Red cut the lead to one, the first of three different times it got within a single point in the first half.
• A Riley Voss 3-pointer and a Marcus Filien jumper in the lane also got the home team within a point.
• Harvard's Danilo Djuricic answered with two free throws and Robert Baker connected on his second trey of the game to push the Crimson's lead to six.
• Cornell wouldn't get back within a possession and trailed at the break 32-24.
• Knapp, who scored Cornell's first eight points, ended the half that way.
• Baker had 10 for Harvard, who held the Big Red to 36 percent shooting.

Second Half

• Rio Haskett opened the second half with a 3-pointer for Harvard on its first possession to make it an 11-point game, and other than a 44-second span after a Terrance McBride jumper, held a double digit lead until there was just two minutes remaining.
• The lead grew to as much as 20 as the Big Red went cold and Harvard hit a number of tough shots, including a long-distance trey by Djuricic to beat the shot-clock buzzer with 15 minutes to play.
• The closest Cornell would get was seven points with three ticks left on the clock after a tough layup by McCarty.
• McBride scored 13 of his points after halftime as Cornell outscored the Crimson 16-4 in the paint.

Up Next

• The Big Red closes out the regular season with the always treacherous Penn-Princeton road trip starting with a rematch against the Quakers on Friday, March 6 at 7 p.m. at the Palestra.

• Cornell will attempt to split the season series for the second straight season after a stretch where the Quakers won 13 of 14 meetings between the two programs.
