EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 10-ranked Cornell fencing posted an 8-3 record at the Northwestern University Duals over the weekend, upsetting No. 1-ranked Princeton in the process on Sunday, Feb. 2 by a score of 14-13. After losing its first three duals of the weekend, the Big Red bounced back to win eight straight, including all six duals on Sunday. Cornell's win over Princeton was its first since Feb. 8, 1992, snapping a streak of 25 straight losses to the Tigers.
Cornell's overall season record improves to 22-6, marking the most single-season victories in the history of the program. The previous best was a record of 19-13, set during the 2016-17 season. Cornell faced four teams ranked in the CollegeFencing360 rankings at Northwestern, falling to Northwestern, Ohio State and Temple. The Big Red defeated several teams receiving votes in the poll, with wins over UC San Diego, Stanford, North Carolina and Denison.
Losses to both Ohio State and Temple were narrow defeats for Cornell, who fell to the Buckeyes, 4-5, in every weapon. The Big Red was off its game against Temple's sabers, going 2-7 in saber, and eventually falling by a score of 14-13.
