ITHACA, N.Y. – Entering its second season, the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) held its 2020 Entry Draft on Monday night, and Cornell men's lacrosse alumni Rob Pannell '13 and Jason Noble '13 were both selected. The third-overall pick in the draft, Pannell was chosen by Atlas LC, while Noble went 14th- overall to Chaos LC.
The PLL's Entry Draft was designed as a means for veteran professional lacrosse players that did not play in the PLL during its inaugural 2019 season to enter the league. The draft featured two rounds of seven picks, with each of the PLL's seven teams receiving one selection in each round.
With its first round pick, Atlas LC selected Cornell men's lacrosse all-time great Pannell at No. 3-overall. For Pannell, joining Atlas LC has both family ties and a link to the current Big Red men's lacrosse team. Pannell's younger brother, James, a 2014 USILA Honorable-Mention All-American at Virginia, also plays for Atlas LC. The team's roster features a face that is familiar to current Cornell men's lacrosse fans as well, as Big Red assistant coach
Connor Buczek '15 is too a member of Atlas LC.
Pannell has enjoyed a successful professional playing career thus far, being named an MLL All-Star in each of his seven years with the New York Lizards and earning the titles of MLL Most Valuable Player and MLL Offensive Player of the Year in 2018. On an international scale, he has twice represented the USA at the ILF World Championships, helping the team to a World Championship in 2018. He was also named to the All-World Team in both 2014 and 2018.
During his time at Cornell, Pannell was the Big Red's first ever ESPY Award Nominee (Best Collegiate Athlete) in 2011, in addition to being a two-time Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award winner (2011, 2013) as the USILA Outstanding Player of the Year and a two-time Jack Turnbull Award winner (2010, 2011) as the USILA Attackman of the Year. He capped off an outstanding collegiate career as the 2013 Tewaaraton Trophy winner after being named a three-time Ivy League Player of the Year and four-time first-team All-Ivy honoree.
With the final pick in the 2020 PLL Entry Draft, Chaos LC selected Noble at No. 14 overall. Noble has played professionally with the NLL's Georgia Swarm for the past seven seasons after being chosen by the team (then the Minnesota Swarm) at second-overall in the 2013 NLL Entry Draft. He was named the league's Defender of the Year in 2017 after helping his team to its first-ever NLL Champions Cup. Noble has also represented Canada at the 2014 and 2018 ILF World Championships, helping the team win gold in 2014.
While at Cornell, Noble was a three time All-America selection, being chosen to the first team in 2013. Noble was also a two-time first-team All-Ivy League selection after earning honorable mention accolades following his sophomore season.
The PLL's College Draft is currently scheduled to follow on April 21, 2020.
