ITHACA, N.Y. — Already named a first-team pick to the All-ECAC Hockey and All-Ivy League teams and a finalist for the ECAC Hockey Player of the Year, junior forward
Morgan Barron has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award, given annually to the nation's top overall college hockey player.
It's the first time Barron has been named a finalist for the award. Other finalists are Jason Cotton (Sacred Heart), Jack Dugan (Providence), David Farrance (Boston University), Jordan Kawaguchi (North Dakota), John Leonard (UMass), Dryden McKay (Minnesota State), Marc Michaelis (Minnesota State), Scott Perunovich (Minn.-Duluth) and Jeremy Swayman (Maine).
The 10 finalists were selected by voting from all 60 Division I college hockey head coaches and by online fan balloting. Next, the 27-member Selection Committee and an additional round of fan balloting through the Hobey website at
www.hobeybaker.com from March 14-25 will determine this year's Hobey Baker winner. Criteria for the award include displaying outstanding skills in all phases of the game, strength of character on and off the ice, sportsmanship and scholastic achievements.
Barron led Cornell in scoring for a second straight season, racking up 32 points on 14 goals and 18 assists in just 29 games. His five power-play goals ranked second on the team in 2019-20. Barron became the first Cornell men's hockey player with at least 30 points in each of his first three seasons with the Big Red since
Riley Nash (2007-10).
In being named to the All-ECAC Hockey first team for a second straight year, Barron is the first Cornell forward to receive the high honor twice since Joe Nieuwendyk (1986 and 1987). Barron is also looking to become the Big Red's first ECAC Hockey Player of the Year since David McKee in 2005.
Cornell has never won the Hobey since it was first presented in 1981. Barron is the seventh Cornellian to be named a finalist and the second in the last three years, joining
Matthew Galajda (a finalist in 2018). Since the committee added in 2002 the Hobey Hat Trick (a trio of second-tier finalists), two Cornellians have reached that level — goaltenders David LeNeveu in 2003 and David McKee in 2005.
This year's Hobey Hat Trick will be announced on April 2, and the Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner will be announced on April 10.
