HAMDEN, Conn. - Cornell women's ice hockey's head coach,
Doug Derraugh, adds his first USCHO Coach of the Year honor to his many accolades following the 2019-20 season. For the first time in his coaching career, Derraugh has been named the coach of the year by all four major award institutions - Ivy League, ECAC Hockey, CCM/AHCA, and, now, the USCHO.
At the helm of the team, the Big Red (28-2-3) posted the best winning percentage in the country (.894) to repeat as ECAC Hockey regular-season champions. With a 19-0-3 league record, Derraugh coached the Cornell women to its first undefeated season in league play while also going unbeaten and untied in the Ivy League (10-0-0).
Derraugh has led the squad to eight NCAA Tournaments, including a five-year streak from 2010-2015. The teams in the early 2010s were more offensively orientated averaging almost four and a half goals a couple of different seasons throughout those five years. It's a testament to Derraugh's coaching that he is able to adapt to the team he is coaching and use the playing styles he has on the ice.
With the likes of seniors
Jaime Bourbonnais and
Micah Zandee-Hart in the back and junior goaltender
Lindsay Browning in net, Derraugh coached his 2019-20 team with the defense on the forefront. The stellar defense averaged 0.94 goals against per game, which led the nation, and a 93 percent penalty kill rate, which also led the nation. Browning, a first-year starter, led the nation with her winning percentage, goals against average and shutouts at the close of the season. As any goalie needs, Browning was helped along by defenders Bourbonnais and Zandee-Hart. Both Bourbonnais and Zandee-Hart could play on both sides of the blue line, each finishing within the top-four in points on the team.
Cornell started the season with a fire, finding wins against six of its first seven opponents, five of which won at least 20 games throughout the season. The defensive squad allowed just three goals in those first seven games. In the end, the Big Red entered the NCAA Tournament as the #1 seed.
