ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell football team will attempt to keep its win streak intact when it steps onto Percy Field for the final time when the Big Red meets Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, Sept. 7, 1914 at 2 p.m.
Cornell's 5-2 start to the 1914 season is due in no small part to the exploits of quarterback Charley Barrett and right halfback Charles Shuler. Barrett is widely regarded as the nation's top quarterback along with Dartmouth's Milt Ghee. The duo of Barrett and Shuler will attempt to improve Cornell's mark to 2-0 all-time against F&M while extending its overall streak to five games – the program's longest since winning six consecutive contests during the 1908 campaign.
After a scoring drought during its two losses (a 9-3 defeat to Pitt and a 7-3 loss to Colgate), the Big Red offense has exploded over the last four games, averaging 36.3 points with a pair of 48-point outings. The defense has allowed just one touchdown and 10 total points in those four wins and still hasn't surrendered a second quarter point this year.
The win streak has coincided with the emergence of Shuler, who has reached the end zone nine times over the last four weeks. He is responsible for 58 total points during the win streak.
The contest will also be a farewell to Percy Field. Since opening in 1890, Cornell has sported an impressive 132-27-6 mark (.818) on the banks alongside Cayuga Lake. The Big Red will try to give its longtime home a fitting send-off when it meets Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.
While Barrett and Shuler have accounted for 16 of the team's 25 touchdowns, left halfback William Collyer has scored this season - once in each of his last three outings.
All-American captain John O'Hearn is considered to be one of the top ends in the country, and his play this season has done nothing to dispel his reputation despite battling injury. Other standouts include tackle Edward Gallogly, guard Dale Munsick, center Willard Cool and fullback Carl Philippi. Each enter the stretch run of the season under All-America consideration.
At 5-1, Franklin & Marshall is riding high since its season-opening 12-0 loss at Lehigh in late September. Owning a 10-0 win over Penn at Franklin Field to kick off its current five-game win streak, F&M is looking to go 2-0 against Ivy League opponents this year. The matchup will be the first between the two schools in a decade, with the Big Red defeating the Diplomats 36-5 on Oct. 22, 1904 on Percy Field behind Edwin Gibson's three touchdowns.
