ITHACA, N.Y. -- In one of the most competitive meets in the country, the Cornell sailing team took an impressive sixth of 18 teams at the 2021 Women's Atlantic Coast Championship this past weekend at Harvard. The Big Red also sent four boats to Hobart and William Smith's David Lee Arnoff Trophy race on Seneca Lake, taking as high as fifth place.
The Big Red climbed two places in the final standings at the conference regatta in the final two races, finishing strong in the same position as it did in the semifinals. With four consecutive race finishes of 4-3-5-3, Cornell hopped past No. 6 Boston College and No. 13 Penn in the final hour. When the boats returned from the water, Cornell sat ahead of four top 10 teams, including Boston College, No. 2 Tulane, No. 8 MIT and No. 9 Georgetown. Ivy League teams comprised five of the top six schools in the final standings.
Brooke Shachoy and
Amelia Neumann sailed A division, finishing in the top five in nine of the weekends' 18 races with one victory. They closed the weekend with consecutive finishes of fourth and fifth.
Bridget Green skippered B division with both
Gabbi DelBello (races 1-2, 7-8, 11-18) and
Jana Laurendeau (races 3-6, 9-10) as crew on the weekend. That grouping also finished strong, with six of the final 13 races being top five efforts with two event victories.
Cornell finished fifth, eighth, 11th and 13th in Geneva as 17 sailors got to race for the weekend. Big Red 1 was made up of
Lillian Myers and
J.J. Smith as skippers with
Emily O'Connell, Rocco Capetta and Peter Jordan as crew. Big Red 2 featured
Lauren Ehnot and
Lucija Ruzevic sailing with
Sophia Fogarty and
Louisa Bjerke. Big Red 3 had Ben and Seth Rizika skippering boats with
Clara Hewson and
Mihika Jain as crew, while Big Red 4 had boats comprised of Aidan Lane and
Susie Foster in A division and Jack Merrill and Max Charlamb in B division.
The Big Red will race at the ACC Coed Finals at Navy this coming weekend.
