Women’s Hockey Outlook, Part 2: Position by Position

10/19/2021 11:00:00 AM

ITHACA, N.Y.— The Cornell women's hockey team will take the ice Friday night looking much different than it did the last time fans saw the Big Red at Lynah Rink.

"Overall I think there're a lot of balance there," said the Everett Family Head Coach of Women's Ice Hockey, Doug Derraugh '91 on his team full of fresh faces. "There isn't necessarily just one area that's our strong suit or one particular player that's going to dominate, but I do think we have a lot of balance, so we're excited."

Derraugh, who has led the Big Red to the NCAA tournament in eight of the last 11 seasons, says he's been most impressed with the team's overall pace in practice so far.

"The team carries a lot of energy into each day and it really shows in our pace of play," he said. "Considering how young we are, the team has done a good job executing on what we've taught them so far."

The Big Red welcome 14 underclassmen including seven forwards, four defenders and three goaltenders, while veteran players make up the rest of the roster ready to continue building on their legacy at Cornell.

"Our veterans have been sharp," said Derraugh. Our seniors and our juniors who have played big minutes for us in the past have been really good in practice. We've got a couple of freshman that I think look really good as well."

The combination of new and old faces alike, along with a speedy front line, a sizable defense and All-American veteran talent in net will give fans something to look for during Friday's season opener matchup against Mercyhurst.

FORWARDS
Coach Derraugh on the team's forwards:

"We have quite a bit of speed up front this year. I think you'll see energy from young players who have a lot of passion for the game and have that natural foot speed."
