ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell women's polo team split its pair of Friday contests, as the Big Red fell on the road to the host Cavaliers, 21-2, in the team's finale at the Virginia Polo Fall Tournament in Charlottesville, Va., before securing a 16-7 win over the Central New York Polo Club at home at the Oxley Equestrian Center in Ithaca, N.Y.
The trio of Annie Rogers, Ellie Finch, and Sophie Kofsky helped propel Cornell to victory against the Central New York Polo Club. Rogers and Finch each scored a game-high five points for the Big Red, with Rogers tallying a season-best five goals and Finch scoring four goals, one of which was good for two points, in her season debut. Kofsky added three goals of her own, including one two-point score, for four points on the contest.
Valeria Marques Valdivia and Daisy Fenwick also contributed to the Big Red win, both making their season debuts as well. Marques Valdivia got in on the scoring action, notching a goal of her own in the fourth chukker for her first of the season.
With the Big Red holding a slim 5-4 advantage over the Central New York Polo Club at the end of the first half, Cornell absolutely dominated in the third chukker to create separation and ultimately seal the victory. The Big Red outscored the Central New York Polo Club 9-0 in the third, with Finch scoring four of her five points in the chukker and Rogers adding three goals. Together, the pair combined for seven of Cornell's nine points in the period.
In Cornell's game against Virginia, Rachel Booth and Lea Jih-Vieira each scored a goal for the Big Red. Cornell finishes out the tournament having gone 1-1 after defeating Colorado State, 22-2, on Wednesday. Following Friday's games, the Big Red now sits at 3-2 on the season.
The Big Red women's polo team will be back in action next weekend for a pair of matchups. Cornell will host Garrison Forest on Friday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Oxley Equestrian Center in Ithaca, N.Y. before traveling for a game against Harvard on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 12 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
