ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore Priscilla Wongso's victory in the 100 freestyle headlined eight top-three finishes for the Cornell women's swimming and diving team at its Ivy League tri-meet against Harvard and Dartmouth on Saturday at Ithaca College's Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium in Ithaca, N.Y.
The Big Red started off its conference slate on a high note, defeating the Big Green, 155.0-143.0, for the first time in three tries to open up Ivy League competition in the win column. Cornell sits at 1-1 in conference action after splitting the meet on Saturday, having fallen to Harvard, 213-87.
Wongso was the lone event winner for the Big Red on the day in what was a highly-competitive meet, touching the wall first in the 100 freestyle in 52.06 to win the event for the second-straight week. Wongso also added a third-place finish in the 50-freestyle, clocking in at 24.26 to place third.
Freshman distance freestyle specialist Allie Danko continues to make an immediate impact for Cornell, posting a pair of top-three finishes in the 1,000 freestyle (10:29.82) and the 500 freestyle (5:06.45), placing second and third, respectively, in her events.
Senior Gillian Caverly led a backstroke group that recorded four top-five finishes on the day, placing third in the 200 backstroke (2:04.91) and fourth in the 100 backstroke (58.38). Caverly had company in both events, with junior Aviva Muñoz placing fifth in the 100 backstroke (58.52) and freshman Marie Williams finishing fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:07.22).
Senior Allison Chang recorded a pair of top-five finishes in her individual events as well, highlighted by a third-place showing in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.61). Chang's time of 1:08.51 in the 100 breaststroke was good for fourth overall. Freshman Amanda Petersen joined Chang in the top-five of the 200 breaststroke, placing fifth in 2:32.40.
Freshman Tori Zhang was the Big Red's top finisher in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 57.59 to place third. It was fellow freshman Alex Syrkin who finished just behind Zhang in fourth with a time of 57.60. Syrkin had a well-rounded day, collecting a trio of fourth place finishes, including in the 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly (2:10.77), and 200 freestyle (1:54.29).
Senior Demetra Williams led Cornell in the diving events, accruing 261.60 points for a third-place finish in the 3-meter and collecting 260.65 points to place fourth in the 1-meter. Junior Elise Jendritz added a fourth-place showing in the 3-meter with 260.80 points.
The Cornell women's swimming and diving team will be back in action next weekend when it competes in another Ivy League tri-meet against Penn and Princeton on Nov. 19-20 in Philadelphia. Diving is slated for a 5 p.m. start on Nov. 19, with swimming following at 12 p.m. on Nov. 20.
