ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell men's lacrosse standout and Cornell Athletic Hall of Fame member Ryan McClay '03 now has another award to add to his extensive list of accomplishments, as he is among the latest class of inductees to the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, USA Lacrosse announced Wednesday.
Eight total inductees (four men, four women) make up the Class of 2021, and in addition to McClay, includes Sheehan Stanwick Burch, Patty Daley, Jenny Levy, John Pirro (posthumous), Tony Resch, Kris Snider, and Beth Stone. The rich tradition of the Cornell men's lacrosse program is evidenced by looking at the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, as McClay becomes the 21st former Cornell men's lacrosse player or coach to be inducted into the hall.
McClay is just one of four Cornell men's lacrosse players, and the only defenseman, to be named a four-time USILA All-American, garnering first-team distinction in 2002 and 2003. A three-time first-team All-Ivy selection, and a unanimous choice twice, McClay became just the fifth defenseman in Ivy League history to be named the conference Player of the Year in 2003. He was also named a candidate for the Tewaaraton Trophy during his senior campaign, given annually to the best lacrosse player in the nation. A two-time captain for the Big Red, McClay shared the Charles H. Moore Senior Varsity Athlete Award at Cornell.
McClay continued to reach great heights beyond Cornell, competing as a member of the U.S. National Team at the 2002 and 2010 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships. At the 2002 games, he helped Team USA clinch the gold medal and was named to the All-World team, in addition to being named the tournament's most valuable defender. He once again helped the U.S. to a gold medal in 2010, earning his second All-World team selection.
On the professional circuit, McClay was taken fifth overall in the 2003 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) draft by the New Jersey Pride. He enjoyed an eight-year professional career with both the Pride and the Boston Cannons and was named to the All-Star game on three occasions.
McClay was inducted into Cornell's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.
