Lior Lavie Joins Cornell Sailing Coaching Staff

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Lior Lavie, a longtime member of the Israeli national team, has been named Associate Head Sailing Coach at Cornell University it was announced today by Brian Clancy, the Ted Moore '71 Director of Sailing. Lavie has coached at the highest levels at both the youth and professional levels.

"We are the sum of our decisions and at the moment I am looking for the next challenge in my coaching career," Lavie said. "Being part of Cornell University and given the opportunity to work with and learn from Brian is a privilege. I am thankful for this new beginning with such a great team and institution."

Lavie has more than a decade of coaching experience at the club and Olympic Development levels following eight years as a member of the Israeli national team (2004-11). He is currently involved in coaching with the US Sailing Olympic Class 49er, as well as at Westminster and Immaculata LaSalle HS teams in Miami, Fla. Lavie's fleets have won multiple national and World Championships, and he has extensive experience with the Optimist and i420.

 
Associate Sailing coach Lio Lavie was hired in January 2022.As a competitor, Lavie has sailed in the J70 World Championships as recently as 2018 when he finished on the podium, taking third among many professional sailors. He has been a high-level youth sailor competing in the i420 and Olympic class 470.
 
"Lior is an expert in coaching the sport of sailing and we are fortunate to welcome him to our community," Clancy said. "He's a true professional and motivated to make a difference at Cornell."

Lavie graduated from Israel's Wingate Institute for Physical Education and Sports and the NAT Holmen school for coaches and trainers in Netanya, Isreal. He is a certified U.S. Sailing Level 3 Coach with all required training to the Olympic standards.
