Big Red Rewind:
• After scoring 11 goals over its final six games before a five-week hiatus for final exams and the holidays, Cornell has needed just two games after the break to match that offensive output thanks to a 5-0 win over Dartmouth on Jan. 8 and a 6-1 defeat of Penn State on Jan. 11.
• The Big Red used five unanswered goals to defeat the Nittany Lions, including three on the rush in a span of 8:01 to close out the second period.
Leah MacSween had her first collegiate three-point game, all coming on assists, to earn ECAC Hockey Driscoll Skating & Skills Player of the Week honors.
• Reigning ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week
Lily Delianedis scored her team-leading eighth goal after setting up
Alexa Davis' winner.
Claudia Yu potted the other goal in the second period, later adding an assist on
Rory Guilday's strike to close the scoring.
•
Deanna Fraser made the start and made 25 saves to earn her first collegiate victory.
• Against Dartmouth on Jan. 8,
Lindsay Browning made 20 saves against the Big Green to secure her fourth shutout of the season and the 16th of her collegiate career. That moves her into sole possession of third place for most clean sheets on the program's all-time record list.
• Cornell then saw the next three games on its schedule (Jan. 14 vs. Clarkson; Jan. 16 St. Lawrence and Tuesday at Colgate) postponed. All of those contests have since been rescheduled for future Tuesday evenings.
Jan. 11 Highlights at Penn State:
By The Numbers:
• Junior
Gillis Frechette (#11, 6-10–16, plus-7) leads the team in scoring and is second in goals to only sophomore linemate
Lily Delianedis (#21, 8-6–14). Junior
Izzy Daniel (#12, 3-12–15, team-best plus-10), the team's leader in assists, typically plays on the other wing of that line. After being named the ECAC Hockey Driscoll Skating and Skills Player of the Week following her three-point effort against Dartmouth, Daniel scored the Big Red's first shorthanded goal of the season in the Jan. 11 win at Penn State.
• Freshman
Rory Guilday (#5, 3-5–8) leads the team's blueliners in scoring. She typically plays alongside sophomore
Ashley Messier (#8, 2-4–6, team-high 36 blocked shots), giving the Big Red a defensive pairing that features international experience from both the U.S. and Canada.
• Graduate student
Lindsay Browning (#29, 5-6-1, 2.19, .920, 4 SO) — who, in 2020, became the program's first goaltender to earn All-America honors is now the first goaltender to serve as the team's sole captain. Browning's four shutouts are the most among all ECAC Hockey goaltenders.
Big Red In Beijing:
• Hockey Canada announced Jan. 12 that four Cornell women's hockey alumnae are among the final roster of 23 that will compete in the upcoming Beijing Winter Games. The group is comprised of forwards Rebecca Johnston '12 (fourth Olympics), Brianne Jenner '15 (third) and Jillian Saulnier '15 (second), and defender Micah Zandee-Hart '20 (first).
•
Doug Derraugh '91 will also be in Beijing with Team Canada, where he will again serve as an assistant coach with the women's national team.
• Lenka Serdar '19 is also ticketed for Beijing after helping the Czech Republic qualify for its first qualification into the Olympics in national team history.
The 300 Club:
• By defeating Dartmouth on Jan. 8,
Doug Derraugh '91 recorded the 300th career victory in his 15-plus seasons behind the Big Red bench as the Everett Family Head Coach of Women's Hockey. In doing so, Derraugh became the 11th active head coach in NCAA Division I women's hockey to reach the 300-win plateau.
• Derraugh earned his 301st win Jan. 11 at Penn State — though he was not on the bench. With Derraugh having departed the Big Red temporarily to coach in the Olympics, Associate Head Coach
Edith Racine will continue as Cornell's acting head coach.
About Brown:
• The Bears enter the weekend on the heels of a 5-1 loss last Saturday at Harvard, though they struck first on a goal in the seventh minute by Tina Paolillo (#7, 2-2–4).
• Brown was able to dress just 13 skaters for the game against Harvard. Shay Maloney (#16, 7-3–10) paces the team offensively with the lead in scoring, goals and shots on goal. Typically a center, Maloney played on the blue line against the Crimson.
• Kaley Doyle (#31, 2-7-1, 2.46, .923, SO) has been the team's primary goaltender, though Hayley Kliczko (#53, 0-6-1, 4.79, .879) has also made eight starts.
• Freshman defender Hannah Partigianoni (#3), who hails from nearby Cortland, made her collegiate debut against Harvard.
The Series With Brown:
• Friday's matchup between Cornell and Brown will be the 100th in the program histories of the oldest varsity teams in women's college hockey history. The series dates back to the 1972-73 season, with the Big Red currently holding a 54-35-10 lead.
• In the teams' first meeting this season on Nov. 6 at Lynah Rink, the Big Red rallied to salvage a 3-3 draw thanks to
Claudia Yu's tying goal with 1:30 left in the third period.
About Yale:
• The Bulldogs got back to winning ways Tuesday night with a 6-0 rout of neighboring Sacrd Heart. Elle Hartje (#4, 9-19–28) scored twice to go with an assist, and Kiersten Goode (#9) also had a pair of goals.
• Pia Dukaric (#30, 5-2-1, 1.50, .921) made 17 saves against the Pioneers for her second shutout of the season. Her six starts on the season are second amongst goaltenders to Gianna Meloni (#32, 7-2, 1.56, .935, 3 SO).
• Hartje leads the team in scoring, typically centering a line with the next highest scorer — Claire Dalton (#24, 7-20–27, 3 PPG) — on one of the wings. Charlotte Welch (#14, 7-14–21) ranks third scoring and typically joins the other two on the top power-play unit, but centers a different line five-on-five.
• Emma Seitz (#6, 9-8–17, 3 PPG) is tied for the team lead in goals and power-play goals, and she holds the team solo lead with a plus-22 rating.
The Series With Yale:
• Cornell holds a dominating 62-13-2 lead in the series, but Yale ended a 22-game winless skid against the Big Red (20-0-2 dating back to Jan. 23, 2009) with a 7-0 victory on Nov. 5 at Lynah Rink.
Up Next:
• Cornell has nothing but three-game weeks on the docket for the rest of the regular season. The busy home stretch starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday against visiting Clarkson before the Big Red heads right back on the road for games at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28 at Princeton and 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29 at Quinnipiac.
