PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior forward
Gillis Frechette scored on a rebound with 2 minutes, 26 seconds left in the third period to lift the Cornell women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Brown on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
The winning goal was created after a failed Brown clear allowed Cornell to work the puck around the end wall, leading to sophomore forward
Lily Delianedis teeing up sophomore defender
Ashley Messier from the right point. Her blast was stopped by Brown goaltender Kaley Doyle, but the rebound bounced into traffic just beyond the top of the crease. After caroming off the leg of junior forward
Izzy Daniel, Frechette scooped a backhand past Doyle's glove, off the inside of the post and into the net.
While the teams played to a fairly uneventful and even first period, Cornell (7-7-1, 5-4-1 ECAC Hockey) controlled much of the game from there with 37 shots on goal against just 13 for Brown (2-15-2, 2-9-1). Seventeen of those Big Red offerings came in the second period, including junior forward
Elana Zingas' goal to break the scoreless deadlock.
The play started with the Bears entering the offensive zone on the rush, and Messier sprawled to block a shot from the right circle. As sophomore forward
Gabbie Rud retrieved the puck on the half wall, Zingas blew the zone to skate into the pathh of Rud's indirect pass into the neutral zone. That created a one-on-one chance entering the Brown zone, where Zingas effectively used the last defender as a screen while snapping a shot over Doyle's glove. It was Zingas' first goal of the season and the second of her collegiate career.
Brown tied the game on Meadow Carman's power-play goal through traffic with 9:30 left in the third, setting the stage for Frechette's late heroics. Graduate student
Lindsay Browning finished with 12 saves to earn the win for Cornell, which improved to 3-0 in 2022 while outscoring opponents by a 13-2 margin.
The Big Red will be back in action at 3 p.m. Saturday with another ECAC Hockey and Ivy League contest against 10th-ranked Yale at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, Conn.
