#8 Men's Hockey Settles For 2-2 Tie With Dartmouth

Cornell rallies late; Dartmouth wins a shootout

ITHACA, N.Y. — Junior forward Jack Malone scored on a power play with 2 minutes, 22 seconds left in the third period to help the Cornell men's hockey team salvage a 2-2 tie with Dartmouth on Friday night at Lynah Rink. The Big Green would go to earn an extra point in the ECAC Hockey standings by winning the best-of-three shootout.

It was a second straight Friday in which Cornell (13-4-2, 8-2-2 ECAC Hockey) found itself trailing at home against an opponent with a losing record. This time, it was Dartmouth (3-12-2, 2-8-2) taking control early on with a power-play goal from Ian Pierce.

Scoring chances were few and far between over the opening two frames, with the teams combining for just seven shots on goal in the second period — yet both mustered to score once. Freshman forward Ondrej Psenicka tied the game by directing in Justin Ertel's sharp-angle feed at the 12:11 mark for his eighth goal of the season. But the Big Green took the lead back 1:59 later on Mark Gallant's strike after a blocked shot.

The Big Red finally found some traction in the third period, which primarily took form in drawing several penalties. The last came in the form of a five-minute major with 5:05 remaining, and it led to Malone slamming in a one-timer from the inside left has mark to tie the game. All told, Cornell outshot Dartmouth over 65 minutes, 35-16.

After a scoreless three-on-three overtime, the teams went to the league-mandated shootout. Malone scored with the Big Red's third attempt, but the Big Green followed suit soon thereafter to take the extra point.

Cornell is back in action at 7 p.m. Saturday, when it hosts rival Harvard at Lynah Rink.
