ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men's track and field team found success across the board at the Kane Invitational on Saturday at Barton Hall in Ithaca, N.Y., but among the many notable performances, the day that the Big Red throws squad had stands out.
Senior Ian Frost's victory in the weight throw led the way, pacing an event squad that went 1-3-4 with each student-athlete throwing a personal-best in the process. For Frost, the win marked his third of the season and second-straight, and his winning distance of 18.87m (61-11.00) ranks third in the Ivy League so far this season. Freshman Phil Coppolino finished third with a heave of 18.16m (59-07.00) while sophomore Brad Morell placed fourth (17.71m/58-01.25).
For Morell, that was just one of two personal-bests on the day, as his throw of 16.38m (53-09.00) in the shot put also marked a collegiate-best and was good for third place. Dan Mead was Cornell's top finisher in the shot put, placing second with a mark of 16.84m (55-03.00).
Christian Martin's impressive season in the 60-meter hurdles continued, as he dropped time once again, clocking in at a personal-best 8.00 to finish third. Martin's improvement in the event this season has been constant, and he now sits second in the Ivy League so far this season, as well as sixth all-time on Cornell's all-time top-10 list.
The throws squad wasn't the only group that proved that strength comes in numbers, as the Big Red clinched at least the top-three spots on the day in the pole vault, 400-meter, and 1,000-meter. Johannes Stromhaug emerged victorious in the pole vault, clearing a season-best 5.01m (16-05.25) to win the event. Kuune Mini (50.10) was the top finisher in the 400-meter, while Eric Eng was the first to cross the finish line in the 1,000-meter (2:33.43).
Mini teamed up with Domenic Barresi, Fabien De Silva, and Sam Young in the 4x400-meter relay and the group clicked, winning the event in 3:22.57. De Silva (50.53) and Young (50.91) also accounted for the other top-three finishes in the 400-meter, placing second and third, respectively.
Other notable performances on the day include Teddy O'Kane's 3,000-meter run, as the freshman picked up his first collegiate victory with a time of 8:40.67. Alec Hill (4:23.11) and Caleb McCurdy (4:25.97) both had strong showings in the mile run, as Hill finished second and McCurdy placed one spot behind in third.
The Cornell men's track and field team will be back in action next weekend when it competes in the Dr. Sander Invitational/Columbia Challenge on Feb. 4-5 at The Armory in New York.
