ITHACA, N.Y. -- A huge second period and a seven-goal run turned the tide after Mercyhurst took an early lead as the Cornell women's hockey team completed the weekend sweep with a 7-2 triumph on Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink. Cornell improved to 2-0-0 to kick off the campaign, while the Lakers fell to 5-5-0.
Alyssa Regalado registered a hat trick and
Izzy Daniel posted two goals and an assist as 11 different players reached the scoring column for the Big Red.
Gillis Frechette also had a three-point day, logging a goal and two assists.
Lily Delianedis and
Rory Guilday each had two assists in the victory. In goal,
Deanna Fraser posted 18 saves in picking up the win.
Cornell held a 32-20 edge in shots and scored on three-of-four power play attempts.
Mercyhurst opened the scoring in the first period when Sydney Petersen's shot from the point found the back of the net on the power play.
Regalado tied the game with a power-play marker less than two minutes in the first period. Out of the intermission, the Big Red scored four goals in the second period to take a 5-1 lead.
Caroline Chan, Frechette, Daniel, and Regalado were the Big Red players to score in the frame.
In the third period, Regalado and Daniel combined for the sixth and seventh unanswered goals for the Big Red, increasing Cornell's lead to 7-1.
Kylee Mahoney tacked on a goal for Mercyhurst with less than 90 seconds left in the game.
Game Notes
• Cornell increased its record all-time over Mercyhurst to 14-17-5 and has won five of its last six over the Lakers.
• Regalado's hat trick was Cornell's first since Kristin O'Neill on Jan. 25, 2020 - snapping a 45-game streak without a Big Red hat trick.
• Along with Regalado's hat trick, Daniel posted a multi-goal game giving Cornell its first pair of multi-goal scorers in the same game since Kristin O'Neill and Maddie Mills against Harvard on March 7, 2020.
• The three power-play goals by the Big Red were the most by Cornell since Jan. 18, 2020, against Harvard (3).
• Cornell scored four times in the second period, marking the Big Red's first time netting four-plus goals in a period since Jan. 18, 2020, against Harvard (4).
Looking Ahead
Cornell will open ECAC Hockey play this weekend when its takes on No. 7 Quinnipiac and No. 9 Princeton in the first of its six consecutive ECAC contests. Puck drop from M&T Bank Arena in Hamden, Conn., and Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton, N.J., is set for 6 p.m. both nights. Game action for each contest will be broadcast on ESPN+.
