ITHACA, N.Y. -- Coming off its first win of the 2022 campaign, the Cornell sprint football team will attempt to start a win streak when it visits Caldwell on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. at Bonnel Field. The contest will be broadcast live on the CACC Network.
Cornell is fresh off a 28-14 victory over Chestnut Hill this past Friday behind senior quarterback
Xavier Martinez's four touchdowns (one rushing, three passing). He hit classmates
Colton Kotecki for a pair of scores and
Cooper Wise for another as the Big Red passing attack accounted for 174 yards. Kotecki hauled in four passes for 116 yards and the two scores, with Martinez ending the night 12-of-18 passing.
Ralph Fleuranvil rushed for 68 yards to lead Cornell.
The defense caused 10 negative plays with four sacks, recovered two fumbles, intercepted a pass and made six pass breakups in holding Chestnut Hill to 229 yards on 70 plays.
Ross Halpern posted 10 tackles with 2.5 for a loss and a sack and
Zac McPherson added 3.5 tackles for loss with nine total stops.
Michael Mosier made three stops with an interception, a fumble recovery and two pass breakups, Wise forced a fumble with a sack and
Jaden Queen had a pair of pass breakups in the win.
Martinez has thrown for 645 yards and five scores this season, with
Luke Verzella (15 receptions, 194 yards), Kotecki (eight catches, 180 yards) and
Colin Boyle (14 catches, 159 yards) all ove 150 yards through the air. Fleuranvil paces the team with 261 rushing yards. On defense,
Will Anderson (37 tackles) and
Billy Turner (32 tackles) lead five players with at leas 20 stops. In just two contests, Wise has 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble.
Caldwell is 4-1 on the season and has won two straight since suffering its only loss of the year to date, 26-13 to Navy. The Cougars are allowing just 11.6 points per contest, including 12 points over the last two contests in wins over Chestnut Hill (28-6) and Saint Thomas Aquinas (20-6). Utilizing a balanced offense that is averaging 146.2 yards per game on the ground and 156.8 through the air, head coach Jim Kelly's is eyeing a fifth win of 2022 - a mark that would tie a program record.
Devon Turner is the team's leading rusher with 353 yards and three touchdowns, while Frank DeMaio has thrown for 738 yards and eight scores. Four different players have more than 100 receiving yards and six have caught a touchdown. Defensively, Andrew Conklin paces the team with 33 tackles with 7.0 for a loss, 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble. Michael Lohrmann has 26 tackles with 5.5 for a loss and 3.0 sacks, with both Gennaro Longobardi and Ethan Edwards each intercepting three passes in five games.
Cornell leads the all-time series 2-1, though Caldwell won the last meeting between the teams when the Cougars claimed a 32-12 triumph at Schoellkopf Field. The Big Red is 1-0 all-time in games played in Caldwell, N.J. after winning a 28-11 contest in 2018.
