Having now spent 17 seasons directing the Cornell women's hockey program, Doug Derraugh has brought the Big Red to their place among the nation’s elite. Taking a program that won just four games in the season prior to his arrival, Derraugh guided the Big Red to the national title game in his fifth season and back-to-back-to-back NCAA Frozen Four appearances in 2010, 2011 and 2012, completely turning around the culture of the women’s hockey program at Cornell. Derraugh once again guided the Big Red to Frozen Four in 2019. He became the first Everett Family Head Coach of Women’s Ice Hockey when the position was endowed in December 2020.

Cornell Women's Hockey Game Notes

PUCK DROP
• The No. 8-ranked Cornell women's hockey team begins ECAC Hockey play this weekend when the Big Red travels to Quinnipiac and Princeton for a pair of games against top 10 opponents.

LYNAH FAITHFUL
• Cornell has excelled at playing in front of the fans at Lynah Rink, who are deemed the Lynah Faithful, over the last 12-plus seasons. The Big Red have had at least a .500 win percentage at home in 11 of the past 12 seasons of competition, posting an overall record of 158-39-16 in that span.

• Since the 2009-10 season, Cornell's .779 win percentage on home ice ranks as the third-highest by a Division I program in that span. The Big Red trail perennial powers Wisconsin and Minnesota.

• The Big Red's .779 win percentage is the highest by a current ECAC program, with the closest program to Cornell being Clarkson, who ranks fifth nationally with its .773 win percentage (178-43-26).

ECAC OPENERS
• Cornell is 6-4-0 in the opening weekend of ECAC Hockey play dating back to 2016-17. The lone losses for the Big Red came last year, as the team opened ECAC play with a 0-3-1 record.

• Back in 2019-20, Cornell opened ECAC Hockey play against Quinnipiac and Princeton at Lynah Rink, posting 1-0 and 3-1 respective victories. It is the first time Cornell is opening conference play on the road at Quinnipiac and Princeton since 2010-11. That year, the Big Red posted identical 5-1 victories over the Bobcats and Tigers.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

• After her five-point weekend, senior forward Gillis Frechette was named ECAC Hockey's Forward of the Week. The reigning ECAC Hockey Player of the Year scored two of Cornell's three goals against Mercyhurst last Friday before logging a goal and two assists in Saturday's five-point win.

• Freshman defenseman Alyssa Regalado also earned ECAC Hockey weekly honors, being named Co-Rookie of the Week with Brown's Jade Iginla. Regalado registered Cornell's first hat trick since Kristin O'Neill in January 2020, and became the first freshman to net a hat trick since Taylor Woods in the 2013 ECAC Hockey semifinals against St. Lawrence. No Cornell defenseman had ever scored a hat trick in a game, dating back to the 1998-99 season.

GUILDAY NAMED TO USA RIVALRY SERIES ROSTER

• Sophomore defenseman Rory Guilday was named to Team USA's roster for the Rivalry Series, USA Hockey announced Tuesday afternoon.

• Guilday is one of six college players named to the Rivalry Series roster, joining Ohio State's Gabby Rosenthal and Riley Brengman, Minnesota State's Kelsey King, Northeastern's Maureen Murphy, and Clarkson's Haley Winn.

• The Rivalry Series, which features the American and Canadian National Teams, begins Nov. 15 in Kelowna, British Columbia. Other dates include Nov. 17 in Kamloops, British Columbia, and Nov. 20 in Seattle at Climate Pledge Arena, home of the NHL's Seattle Kraken.

GUILDAY NAMED TO PRESEASON TEAM
• Sophomore Rory Guilday was one of two defensemen named to the All-ECAC Hockey preseason team during the conference's annual media day on Sept. 14.

• Guilday had a strong freshman year for the Big Red last season. In 29 games, the 5-foot-11 defender logged 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) while blocking 74 shots, which was second on the team, trailing Ashley Messier's team-high 78 blocks.

REPRESENTING ECAC WELL
• After opening the season ranked No. 12 team in the DCU/USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls, Cornell has remained among the top 15 in all seven polls this year.

• In the most recent iteration, Cornell improved its ranking to No. 8 in the DCU/USCHO.com poll, while coming in at No. 9 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.

• Cornell is currently one of six ECAC Hockey programs ranked among the top 15 programs in both the DCU/USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls. Harvard and St. Lawrence are ECAC programs currently receiving votes in both polls.

RETURNING POWER
• Cornell is returning majority of its offense from last year's team as 18 players who registered at least one game played last year are back for the Big Red.

• Just over 94 percent of the Big Red's total offense from last year is back, returning 179 of its 190 points from the 2021-22 campaign. Nearly 92 percent of Cornell's goal scoring from last year (67 of 73 goals) return, including both of the Cornell's double-digit scorers in Lily Delianedis (14) and Gillis Frechette (12).

• Frechette, who led the team with her 40 points (12 goals, 28 assists), is one of the top nine scorers from last year who are back for the Big Red in 2022-23. The others on the list include Delianedis, Izzy Daniel, Rory Guilday, Kaitlin Jockims, Ashley Messier, Leah MacSween, Gabbie Rud, and Claudia Yu.

• Every player who scored a game-winning goal for Cornell last year is back, while 14 of the Big Red's 16 goals scored on the power play are also returning.

LEADERSHIP GROUP ANNOUNCED

• Frechette and Daniel were two of four alternate captains for last year's squad, which was captained by then fifth-year goaltender Lindsay Browning.
