NEW HAVEN, CONN. -- The Cornell volleyball team fell to Yale (17-1, 9-0 Ivy), who sits atop the Ivy, in straight sets on Friday, October 28. The Big Red were led by freshmen duo
Eliza Konvicka and
Meghan Gaffigan who tallied a combined 11 kills.
The Big Red traded initial points in set one with the Bulldogs, but could not find a rhythm to settle into. Yale led for the remainder of the set, at one point going on a 8-1 run to lead by as many as nine at 20-11. The Bulldogs went on to win set one, 25-17.
Set two opened with a Cornell 3-2 run for the first lead of the night for the Big Red. Cornell and Yale traded leads through 9-9, when the Bulldogs found som momentum to pull ahead. The Bulldogs built their lead to 22-15, but Cornell fought for a 5-1 run to trail 23-20, but Yale was able to hang on and close out the set 25-20.
The third set opened with a 4-1 Yale run, but Cornell battled to knot the set at six and again at eight. Yale found a 4-0 run to build out a 12-8 lead, forcing a Cornell timeout. The Big Red fought to get back within two at 14-12, 15-13, and 16-14, but the Bulldogs kept the lead to close out 25-16 and earn the season sweep.
