ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell sailing team wrapped up group competition with a pair of strong efforts, grabbing second at the MAISA Women's and ninth at the War Memorial Open championship this past weekend. With its cumulative effort in the spring and fall women's championships, the Big Red grabs the No. 1 ranking in MAISA for 2023.
The three-time defending women's championship squad grabbed second to Georgetown, scoring 80 points over 11 races to the Hoyas' 61. There was a big gap to third, with Penn scoring 114. Both A and B division fell behind Georgetown, with B division's 32 points the second-lowest among all teams in all divisions. With
Meredith Moran as skipper and crewed by
Gabbi DelBello (races 1-10) and
Jana Laurendeau (race 11), the boat finished in the top three in eight of 11 races with two victories. A division had
Bridget Green (races 1-9) and
Sophia Devling (races 10-11) as skipper and
Amelia Neumann (races 1-9) and
Sophia Pearce (races 10-11) as crew.
The Big Red also earned a top-half finish at the War Memorial, the conference's open championship. With 107 points, the Big Red was within seven points on a top six effort at SUNY Maritime. B division was fourth overall with th tandem of
J.J. Smith and
Sophia Mulvania registering two runner-up race finishes among six starts. A division sailed seven races, with Hayden Earl and
Lauren Ehnot as skipper and
Sophia Fogarty and
Lucija Ruzevic as crew.
The Big Red will close out the fall campaign at the singlehanded national championships at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. Ruzevic and Ehnot will sail representing Cornell.
