Big Red Rewind:
• Cornell wrapped up a six-game home stand with a weekend sweep, holding off its opponents' rallies for a 4-2 win over Rensselaer on Friday and a 5-3 victory versus Union on Saturday.
•
Lily Delianedis and
Kaitlin Jockims scored late in the second period to open up a three-goal lead on the Engineers, who then countered with a pair of goals inside six minutes of the third.
• Cornell finally put the game to bed with
Ashley Messier's snipe off the crossbar with 5:24 to play. Delianedis and Jockims both had assists to go with their respective goals.
• It was a similar storyline less than 24 hours later, with the Big Red scoring three times in the first period before Union tied the game within a 10-minute span to open the second.
•
Izzy Daniel's second goal of the day proved to be the winner with 3:20 left in the middle frame, then
Samantha Burke's strike on redirection midway through the third capped the scoring.
• The game against the Dutchwomen also served as the Big Red's Senior Day, with the team's elder stateswomen taking center stage.
Athena Song opened the scoring added later added an assist, and
Bella Kang's first assist of the season was the shot that Burke tipped in during the third.
Postseason Watch:
• As ECAC Hockey enters its final week of the regular season, Cornell has already clincehd a spot in the playoffs and sits in seventh place in the standings.
• All three of the Big Red's remaining opponents are above it in the standings, but Cornell has also defeated each of those foes — Colgate, St. Lawrence and Clarkson — earlier this season.
• A regulation-time loss Tuesday at Colgate would eliminate Cornell from contention for a top-four seed and home ice in the quarterfinals.
Saturday's Highlights vs. Union:
Friday's Highlights vs. Rensselaer:
By The Numbers:
• Junior forward
Gillis Frechette (#11, 12-24–32, plus-21) continues to lead the team in scoring. She has 18 points over just the last nine games, and she enters Tuesday's game ranked 13th nationally with an average of 1.44 points per game.
• Sophomore forward
Lily Delianedis (#21, 12-13–25) is tied with Frechette for the team's goal-scoring lead. She was recently named the ECAC Hockey and national rookie of the month after posting eight points over the Big Red's seven games in January. Her average of 1.00 point per game ranks fourth nationally among skaters making their collegiate debuts this season.
• Junior
Izzy Daniel (#12, 8-21–29), the team leader with a plus-22 rating, typically plays on a line with Delianedis and Frechette.
• Freshman
Rory Guilday (#5, 7-9–16) continues to lead the team's blueliners in scoring. She typically plays alongside sophomore
Ashley Messier (#8, 3-7–10, team-high 65 blocked shots), giving the Big Red a defensive pairing that features international experience from both the U.S. and Canada.
• Graduate student
Lindsay Browning (#29, 11-9-2, 2.10, .924, 6 SO) — who, in 2020, became the program's first goaltender to earn All-America honors — is the first goaltender to serve as the team's sole captain. Browning's six shutouts are third nationally and most among ECAC Hockey goaltenders.
Big Red In Beijing:
• Cornell has four women's hockey alumnae currently competing for Team Canada, which will compete in the goal medal game against the United States on Thursday at the Beijing Games.
• Forward Brianne Jenner '15 leads all skaters at the tournament with nine goals. She also has four assists for 13 points and a plus-13 rating over six games.
• Fellow forwards Rebecca Johnston '12 (10 points) and Jill Saulnier '15 (two points), and defenseman Micah Zandee-Hart '20 (four points) have also played in all six games.
• Forward Lenka Serdar '19 competed with Czech Republic, which advanced as far as the quarterfinals in its first-ever appearance in the Olympics.
•
Doug Derraugh '91, the Everett Family Head Coach of Women's Hockey at Cornell, is serving as an assistant coach with Team Canada. With Derraugh currently in China, Associate Head Coach
Edith Racine is Cornell's acting head coach.
About Colgate:
• The Raiders haven't surrendered a goal since seeing Cornell last, skating away with victories of 8-0 over Union on Friday and 3-0 against Rensselaer on Saturday. Hannah Murphy (#82, 10-2, 1.73, .912) only needed to make a total of 37 saves over the two games for her first two shutouts of the season.
• Murphy has played Colgate's last four games, but Kayle Osborne (#31, 13-5-1, 1.95, .911, SO) has been the team's primary goaltender over the course of the whole season.
• Sophomore Kalty Kaltounkova (#98, 20-23–43; 4 PPG) has taken over the team lead in scoring, having scored six goals over the last six games. Her average of 0.67 goals per game ranks ninth nationally.
• Kaltounkova typically plays on a line with the team's next two highest scorers. Junior Danielle Serdachny (#9, 13-29–42, team-high plus-22) pivots the trio, while sophomore Dara Greig (#77, 19-16–35) skates on the opposite wing.
• Junior forward Kaitlyn O'Donohue (#16, 9-11–20) and senior forward Rosy Demers (#81, 5-15–20) join Kaltounkova as team leaders with four power-play goals apiece.
The Series With Colgate:
• Cornell leads Colgate, 44-15-4, in an all-time series that dates back to the 1973-74 season, including a 3-2 victory on Feb. 6 in the teams' first meeting this year.
•
Rory Guilday scored the winner with 9:24 left, and
Gillis Frechette factored into all of the Cornell scoring with a goal and two assists.
Lindsay Browning made 34 saves.
• The victory was the Big Red's third against a ranked team this season.
Up Next:
• Cornell wraps up its regular season with two more in-state road games, heading up to the North Country for a game at 6 p.m. Friday against St. Lawrence and 3 p.m. Saturday versus Clarkson.
