CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Freshman
Max Jensen continued his hot start with two more hits, but the Cornell baseball team was spilled by Virginia on Sunday, 19-1, to wrap up a sweep of a three-game series at Disharoon Park.
Entering the day 4-for-4 in his first two collegiate games, Jensen drove in the Big Red's only run of the day during the fourth inning. Freshman
Jakobi Davis worked out a lead-off walk, then advanced to third when junior
Joe Hollerbach jumped on a pitch with a full count and came within a foot or two of clearing the fence just inside the left foul pole, settling for a double. After the first out of the inning on a screamer from senior
Austin Flematti that was snared by the third baseman, Jensen worked his count full before dunking a ball over the shortstop to drive in Davis.
That was all the Big Red could muster against Virginia (7-0), which is off to its best start since 2017 after qualifying for the College World Series in 2021. Jensen and Hollerbach were both 2-for-4, and Cornell's other hit on the day came from sophomore
Nathan Waugh in his first collegiate start.
The Big Red returns to the road next weekend with a three-game set at Coppin State, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday before the series finale on Sunday.
