Baseball Now Slated For Sunday Games vs. Maryland, Georgetown

3/11/2022 11:00:00 AM

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell baseball team heads back to The Old Line State this weekend for a Sunday doubleheader against a pair of teams at Maryland's Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. The Big Red opens against Georgetown in a neutral-site game at 10 a.m. before taking on the nationally-ranked host Terrapins immediately thereafter.

The Big Red is coming off its first victories of the season, when it used an offensive surge to pound out 27 runs in a three-game series at Coppin State. Cornell won the first two games, 11-7 and 14-5, before the Eagles regrouped to win Sunday's finale, 21-2, leaving the Big Red at 2-4 for the young season.

The star of the weekend was junior Joe Hollerbach, who captured Ivy League Player of the Week honors after a stellar stretch in which he was 9-for-13 with two home runs, six RBIs and three stolen bases. He became the first Big Red player in at least 10 years to hit for the cycle. Hollerbach enters the weekend ranking third in the nation with a .542 batting average and ninth with a 1.000 slugging percentage.

On the mound, the Big Red's first two starters rebounded nicely from a rough opening weekend at Virginia. Senior Luke Yacinich's first six innings of work were scoreless in the series opener, then junior Spencer Edwards fanned eight across a quality six-inning start in the middle game of the set. Yacinich is scheduled to start against the Hoyas, while Edwards is the probable starter against the Terrapins.

Maryland (10-2) enters the weekend 24th in the D1Baseball.com national rankings on the strength of an 8-0 start that was powered by three-game road sweeps of Baylor and Campbell. The Terrapins dropped two of three last weekend before rebounding with an 8-6 win over VCU on Tuesday. The teams were scheduled to play again the following day, but that contest was postponed.

Georgetown (8-4) also had a Wednesday game postponed after a 5-4 victory over William & Mary on Tuesday. It was the team's third straight win after taking the last two of a three-game series at home against UMass last weekend. Jake Hyde paces the offense with a .480 batting average, while Andrew Ciufo is batting .421 with a team-high four home runs and five stolen bases.

The Big Red is 3-8 all-time against the Terrapins, though the programs haven't squared off since 1948. Cornell and Georgetown started competition in 1893, with the Hoyas holding a 5-18-2 advantage in the series.
