Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore
Matt Barnhorst hit his first collegiate home run and junior
Joe Hollerbach continued his hot start to the Cornell baseball team's season on Saturday, though Richmond won the middle game of the weekend series at Pitt Field, 9-2.
Hollerbach extended his hitting streak to eight games with a 2-for-5 performance at the plate in addition to a couple sure-handed snags of line drives from his post at third base. The Big Red's 1 and 2 hitters in the lineup, junior
Wils Guy and graduate student
Jason Apostle, also had two hits apiece.
Cornell (2-8) took advantage of a pair of Richmond (12-4) errors in the second inning to plate its first run and tie the score, but the hosts manufactured a run to take the lead back in the third following a pair of base hits, a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. D.J. Pacheco's homer to left in the fourth inning bumped the Spiders' lead to 3-1.
Junior starter
Spencer Edwards worked 5.1 innings before his departure with two on, then Richmond used a pair of singles and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to score three more runs.
Barnhorst's home run to right center led off the seventh. Cornell then threatened to make the game close with two on and two out in the eighth, but pinch-hitting freshman
John Quinlan's frozen rope was hit directly at the first baseman to retire the side.
The teams are scheduled to wrap up the series at noon Sunday, with senior
Luke Yacinich slated to start for Cornell.
