ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell baseball team returns to action this weekend with three games at Coppin State. The teams open with a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday before Sunday's finale at 11 a.m. Sunday on the artificial surface at Blandair Park in Columbia, Md.
In its first action in nearly two years, Cornell (0-3) took on the steep challenge of a trip to Virginia, which is ranked fifth in the nation by Baseball America with seven straight victories to start the year – the last three coming against the Big Red.
While the Cavaliers won each game, Cornell bats produced 12 runs over the weekend. Leading that charge was freshman
Max Jensen, who started off his collegiate career by going 6-for-8 with a pair of doubles, a pair of RBIs and a stolen base. The effort led to Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors.
Among the others to show well at the plate were junior
Joe Hollerbach, who was 4-for-11 with a double, and junior
Wils Guy, who sported a .455 on base percentage. The Big Red used the opportunity of steep competition to get a lot of proverbial feet wet, with 16 players getting at least four plate appearances and 11 pitchers being deployed.
Coppin State (2-6) enters the weekend on the heels of a 12-4 victory on Sunday over visiting Saint Peter's, helping the Eagles avoid being swept in the four-game series. Coppin set a single-game record with six triples in the game, which was one shy of tying the NCAA record. The Eagles' other victory this season was a midweek game against Navy on Feb. 23 after the team started off being swept in three games at California Baptist.
This weekend will mark the first-ever games between the programs.
