BOSTON – Sophomores
Lauren Stein and
Jenny Wong battled to three-set victories in singles to help the Cornell women's tennis team finish off a 5-2 victory over Boston University on Sunday morning at Murr Center. It marked the fourth straight victory for Cornell (4-7).
After starting the day by securing the doubles point with matching 6-3 wins at the top and bottom positions, the Big Red again got strong performances from the top of its singles lineup to keep the lead. Freshman
Lan Mi moved to 9-1 in duals from the #1 spot with a comfortable 6-1, 6-2 win, and senior Katherine Ngyuen delivered a similar victory from #2. BU (5-7) flexed its strength from the bottom half of the singles order for a couple straight-set victories to leave its deficit at 3-2 as the final two matches went third sets.
Stein had to battle back to even get to that point after dropping the first set at #3, but responded by winning at love in the second set. Wong never trailed at #5, answering a dropped second set with a 6-4 victory in the third.
Up next for the Big Red is its Ivy League debut against Columbia, which is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday in New York.
