Army West Point Halts Cornell's 13-Game Non-Conference Win Streak

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Army West Point scored the game's first seven goals and never let Cornell back into the game as the 12th-ranked Black Knights topped the fourth-ranked Big Red 17-10 on Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. Both teams ended the afternoon with identical 10-2 records.

Cornell had played with fire often this year in the first quarter, and it caught up to them on Saturday. Playing its third game in a week, the closest the Big Red was able to get back within was five goals (10-5).

The high-powered Black Knights' offense, averaging 14.4 goals per game, netted 17 in the first 49 minutes with six different players scoring at least two. Ryan Sposito, grandson of legendary Cornell head coach Richie Moran, scored three times and both Brendan Nichtern and Paul Johnson were credited with two goals and two assists. Will Coletti controlled the face-off circle, winning 19-of-28 with 17 ground balls and goalkeeper Wyatt Schupler made 12 saves in picking up the victory.

CJ Kirst scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Big Red offense, while Billy Coyle had two goals and an assist and Alex Holmes scored twice. Gavin Adler, Harrison Bardwell and Joseph Bartolotto III each caused three turnovers and Chayse Ierlan (six saves) and Wyatt Knust (five saves) combined for 11 stops in goal for the home team.

Army West Point held a 44-36 edge in shots, a 37-30 advantage in ground balls and enjoyed a 20-of-31 day in the face-off circle.

Six different scored posted goals at Army West Point built a 6-0 lead less than a minute into the second quarter thanks in large part to its 6-of-7 start at the "x". It was 7-0 when Kirst got the Big Red on the board 19:40 into the contest. Cornell scored the final goal of the first half to go into the break trailing 9-3, then scored two of the first three in the second half to get to 10-5.

Unlike its Monday game at Syracuse, a comeback wasn't in the cards for the Big Red. Army answered with a 5-0 run over just 6:30 of game action to turn it into a double-digit lead and the Big Red never threatened, even after scoring five of the final seven goals.
