ITHACA, N.Y – The Cornell baseball team will return to Hoy Field following its eight-game road swing this week, as the Big Red is set to host Binghamton for a single game on Wednesday, April 20 at 3:30 p.m.
The Big Red is hoping to bounce back after getting swept in this past weekend's three-game series at Ivy League opponent Penn. Cornell took an early lead in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader thanks to a
Max Jensen RBI groundout, but the Quakers answered quickly, pushing three runs across in the bottom half of the first. Penn added three more runs to their lead in the second and tacked on four more insurance runs later in the ballgame to defeat Cornell 10-1. In the second game, Penn jumped out to an early 4-0 lead that they would never relinquish. The Big Red cut the deficit to three in the fourth inning, but the comeback attempt fell short as the Quakers took the game 10-4. Penn completed the series sweep in the finale on Sunday, hanging eleven runs on the Big Red in the sixth inning, powering the Quakers to a 15-6 victory. The sweep dropped Cornell's record to 7-18 on the year and 3-9 in conference play.
Nathan Waugh (.355, three home runs, 12 RBI) and
Max Jensen (.337, 11 doubles, two home runs, 15 RBI) lead an offense that is batting .246 as a unit.
Spencer Edwards and
Kevin Cushing each have two wins this season on the mound and the Big Red is fielding at a .951 clip.
Binghamton enters Wednesday's contest with a 10-20 record. The Bearcats are fresh off a successful weekend of conference play, taking two-of-three games against Stony Brook. Binghamton dropped the series opener against Stony Brook 5-3, but rebounded in the final two games, winning the middle game 8-4 and the series finale 6-4. Cavan Tully (.327, eight doubles, three home runs, 16 RBI), Evin Sullivan (.320, nine doubles, three home runs, 18 RBI) and Connor Aoki (.243, seven doubles, six home runs, 18 RBI) lead the Bearcats' offense. Reliever Jack Collins (2-2, 2.10 ERA, three saves, 34 strikeouts in 25.2 innings) has been the rock on the pitching staff, allowing opponents to hit just .165 against him.
Wednesday's contest will be the second of three meetings between Cornell and Binghamton this season and the first time Cornell will host the Bearcats since the 2019 season. Binghamton is ahead in the season series with the Big Red, winning the first game of the series last Tuesday, 5-3.
