ITHACA, N.Y. -- Yale salvaged a win out of the three-game series with Cornell, pounding out 16 hits to cruise to an 18-5 win on Sunday afternoon at Hoy Field. The Bulldogs avoided the sweep by jumping out to a 17-0 lead midway through the sixth to improve to 13-8 (4-2 Ivy), while Cornell fell to 5-12 (2-4 Ivy).
Nathan Waugh was 3-fo-3 with a double and three RBI to lead the Big Red. Cornell put 14 baserunners on against Yale pitching. Nine of Yale's runs were unearned as the Bulldogs took full advantage of a pair of errors by the home squad.
Yale scored two in the first and four in the second, but blew the game open with crooked numbers in the fifth and sixth. A four-run frame was followed by seven runs in the sixth as Yale cruised to the win.
Colton Shaw went 6.0 innings on the mound, scattering six hits and allowing two runs while striking out five. Jake Gehri led the Yae offense with a 3-for-6 day with a home run and six RBI.
Cornell will play a midweek game against Canisius on Tuesday, April 5 at 3 p.m. in Buffalo.
