5/2/2022 2:30:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell baseball team will play its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday, May 3 when the Big Red travels to Binghamton for a bout with the Bearcats. The game is slated for 6:30 p.m. at the Bearcats Baseball Complex in Vestal, N.Y.

Cornell will bring a 9-23 record (4-14 Ivy) into Tuesday's ballgame. This past weekend, Cornell dropped all three games of its series with Ivy League front runner Columbia. The Big Red hung with Columbia for the first six innings in game one, taking a 3-2 lead off an RBI single from Austin Flematti in the second and a pair of RBI base hits from Sam Kaplan and Jason Apostle in the sixth. Columbia pulled ahead in the seventh thanks to a three-run homer by Joshua Solomon and tacked on two insurance runs in the final two frames to win 7-3. In game two, Columbia got out to an early 5-0 lead after four innings. The Big Red pushed two across in the seventh to cut the lead to three, but were unable to complete the comeback, falling to the Lions 5-2. In the series finale on Sunday, Columbia scored eight runs in the first two innings to take a resounding 8-0 lead which they would never surrender. The Big Red scratched out five runs on nine hits in the contest, but were unable to erase the deficit as Columbia claimed a 11-5 victory.

Sam Kaplan continued his hot streak at the plate, going 4-for-11 in the series with a home run, a double, two runs scored and four driven in. Kaplan (.338 BA, seven home runs, 21 RBIs) and Max Jensen (.345 BA, 40 hits, 21 RBIs) have led the Big Red offensively this season. Luke Yacinich has been steady on the mound for the Big Red, tossing 63.0 inning and posting two wins.

Binghamton is fresh off a series victory over UMBC this past weekend. The Bearcats took the first twogames of the series, 6-1 and 6-4, but could not complete the sweep, dropping the series finale 12-7. With the series win, Binghamton improved its record to 15-22 (11-10 in America East play). The Bearcats are lead offensively by Evin Sullivan (.313 BA, 5 home runs, 25 RBIs) and Cavan Tully (.310 BA, 40 hits, 17 RBIs). Jack Collins has been impressive out of the bullpen for Binghamton, posting a 2-2 record with a 2.12 ERA, a 0.94 WHIP and 6 saves with 40 strikeouts in 29.2 innings of work.

Tuesday's game will be the final meeting between Cornell and Binghamton this season. The teams split a pair of contests earlier this year, with Binghamton winning 5-3 on April 12 and Cornell prevailing on April 20 10-9 in 10 innings.
