NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Seven Cornellians qualified for Sunday's finals and six more scored in track and field events during Saturday's opening day of the 2022 Outdoor Heptagonal Championship at Yale's Dwyer Track. The Big Red ends day one in sixth place with seven points on a wet and measured track.

Perry Mackinnon's 29:23.55 in the 10,000 meters was good for fifth and three more valuable team points as the top five all finished within 10 seconds of each other.Â

Ian Frost scored with his sixth-place effort in the hammer with a best of 57.52 that included two throws of 188 feet or better.

Smith Charles was sixth in the long jump with a best of 7.22m (23-8 1/4).
• Three Big Red men scored in the pole vault, with
Shane Racey (No. 5 all-time, 5.12m, 16-9 1/2) taking fifth and
Dylan Rodgers (5.02m, 16-5 1/2) and
Johannes Stromhaug (5.02m, 16-5 1/2) tying for sixth.

Marek Nowak (sixth, 3:54.98) and
Damian Hackett (ninth, 3:55.87) qualified for the 1,500 meter finals after the prelims.

Christian Martin won his heat and tied for the fastest time of the day in the 110 hurdles (14.11) to qualify for Sunday's finals.
• Martin also qualified for the finals in the 400m hurdles after crossing the line in 55.09.

Tomas Kersulis posted a time of 47.59 in the 400m, securing the second seed entering the finals after winning his heat.
• Kersulis was third in qualifying at 200m in 20.84, just .2 off the winning pace and winning his heat and just .04 off his own personal best.

Rhys Hammond will race for the 800m title on Sunday after capturing second in his heat with the fifth-fastest time overall (1:53.82).
