ITHACA, N.Y. -- Coming off a bye week, the Cornell sprint football team will try and get on track when it opens its home schedule against Mansfield on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field.
The Big Red will be looking for its first win of the season after suffering a 72-0 defeat at Army West Point in its opener on Sept. 16. Cornell will attempt to rebound after winning two of its final three contests of 2021 - a 30-27 victory over Saint Thomas Aquinas and a 6-0 triumph over Chestnut Hill.
Billy Turner (10 tackles, 1.0 TFL) and
Will Anderson (10 tackles) paced the defense, while quarterback
Xavier Martinez (725 passing yards and four touchdowns) leads the offense for head coach
Terry Cullen, who sports a 190-167-7 record with six league championships since taking over as head coach in 1977.
Mansfield is 1-1 on the season after losses to Caldwell (33-17) and a win over Chestnut Hill (41-20) to open the season. Cahsid Raymond is averaging 105.0 rushing yards per game on 8.8 yards per carry in the rushing game and has accounted for four touchdowns, throwing for 166.5 yards at quarterback. Defensively, Matt Robert has 21 tackles with three for a loss and a blocked kick. Fifth-year head coach John Evans sports a 14-10 record directing the Mounties.
The Big Red leads the all-time series between the teams 14-2, though Mansfield has won two straight. Included was a 48-3 victory for the Mounties last fall in the season opener for both teams. Cornell won the first 14 meetings after Mansfield joined the league in 2008 and is 6-1 all-time at Schoellkopf Field.
